Bluffton: Overnight Road Repairs Scheduled on Bluffton Parkway for Next Two Weeks

Bluffton residents should prepare for overnight road repairs beginning tonight on Bluffton Parkway, affecting a 1.5-mile section between Buck Island Road and Red Cedar Street.

Repair Schedule

  • Duration: March 31 – April 14, 2025
  • Hours: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily
  • Area: Between Buck Island Road and Red Cedar Street

Beaufort County officials warn that drivers can expect lane closures, road cones, and signage during these construction hours. Motorists are advised to use extra caution while navigating through the work zone.

According to county spokesperson Hannah Nichols, these repairs are routine and follow similar work conducted in the area in April 2024. Previous projects also took place from Buck Island Road to Buckingham Landing Road last September.

Traffic Improvement Context

As the population of Beaufort County has grown, traffic congestion has increased, raising concerns about local intersections. In an effort to address these issues, county leaders plan to ask voters to approve a 1% sales tax for traffic improvements in November 2025. This request follows a prior tax initiative from 2018, which resulted in only 10% of the projected projects being completed.

2018 Penny Referendum Overview

  • Total collected: Approximately $146 million as of July 2024
  • Projects initiated: 34 in three categories: US 278 corridor improvements, Lady’s Island corridor improvements, and sidewalks/multi-use pathways
  • Completed: 3.5 projects; 1 under construction; 2 in right-of-way acquisition; 3 on hold; 14.5 in design

The budget for these projects has exceeded initial estimates due to funding shortfalls. Upcoming improvements include replacing the MacKay Creek Bridge on US 278 and addressing congestion, with many projects expected to complete by early 2028.

Intersection Realignment Project

The county is also moving forward with plans to realign the Bluffton/Buckwalter Parkway intersection, having identified four potential options. Option D is currently the preferred choice among council members. The county has allocated $2.5 million for this project, with total costs projected between $2.5 million and $10 million.

Public meetings related to traffic improvement projects, including the intersection realignment, are ongoing to gather community feedback.
