In the tranquil town of Bluffton, something extraordinary happened just a few weeks ago that shook the very early morning stillness. On September 22nd, a terrifying incident unfolded on May River Road when a sedan tragically crashed into a tree at around 1:40 a.m.. What followed next would change the lives of many involved and spotlight the bravery of our local heroes.
As flames erupted from the wreckage, illuminating the darkness of the night, a passenger was trapped inside the burning vehicle. With the fire spreading rapidly, there were only seconds to spare. Fortunately, two brave officers were on the scene ready to take immediate action. Officer Azahel Young, only 27 years old and fresh off his first year with the Bluffton Police Department, didn’t hesitate for a second. Armed with a crowbar, he sprinted toward the car, knowing he had to save the trapped passenger.
Last week, our community came together to honor the courageous efforts of these two officers. During a special ceremony, Officer Young received the Medal of Valor Award, the very first of its kind given by the Bluffton Police Department. Chief of Police Joe Babkiewicz expressed immense pride, stating that this medal is reserved for officers who put their own lives at risk to save others. Alongside him, the valiant Staff Sgt. Brian Kaase of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office was presented with the Life Saving Award for his heroic actions that night.
The wreck report reveals that the driver had escaped the burning sedan, leaving the passenger trapped inside. With time running out, Young swiftly pried open the front passenger door, aided by a bystander who assisted in the rescue effort. Just as the flames threatened to consume everything, Sgt. Kaase arrived with a fire extinguisher, fighting off the fire long enough for Young to unbuckle the trapped passenger and pull him to safety. Only moments later, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, sending smoke and ash billowing through the air.
The passenger was rushed to a local hospital but thankfully only sustained non-fatal injuries. Speaking about the incident, Sgt. Kaase reflected, “I’m very thankful that we were in the right place at the right time.” With a background in the military police of both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, Kaase knew all too well the risk involved in such a rescue. This wasn’t just a job for him; it was a calling.
Young shared similar sentiments, expressing his gratitude to God for protecting everyone involved. He emphasized how relieved he felt that they could rescue the passenger and that other first responders were present to assist. Having also received a life-saving award for an earlier medical call, Young is proud to serve in a community where camaraderie is a priority.
The commendations awarded to Officers Young and Kaase serve as a reminder of the perilous situations officers often face. They highlight the importance of dedication and quick thinking during emergencies. Chief Babkiewicz couldn’t be prouder, stating that officers like Young represent an amazing group within the department capable of incredible things. He expressed excitement in leading such motivated individuals who strive to make Bluffton a safer community.
In the wake of this event, the Bluffton community stands in awe, grateful for the bravery of these officers who are always ready to step up when it matters most. If anything, this incident shines a light on the qualities we value: courage, selflessness, and teamwork.
