This special occasion is not only about saying goodbye but also about honoring a remarkable journey that has significantly impacted the community.

A Journey that Began in 1999

Derek Franks joined the Bluffton Township Fire District in August 1999, and since then, he has climbed the ranks showcasing his commitment to public safety and excellence. His career milestones include being promoted to lieutenant in 2008, captain in 2012, station captain in 2014, and ultimately becoming a battalion chief in 2019. Each role he played allowed him to touch the lives of many, both in and out of his firefighting duties.

A Leader Beyond Bluffton

But Franks’s incredible journey doesn’t stop there. From 2003 to 2022, he also served as a rescue specialist on South Carolina Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue. His leadership was crucial during some of the country’s most challenging disasters. For example, during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he received a field promotion to rescue squad officer, leading searches in over 1,200 homes for a grueling 13 days. His tenacity shines through his other accomplishments as well; during Superstorm Sandy in 2012, he flawlessly directed a boat team, carrying out 39 rescues when people needed it most.

Notably, in 2015, amid the catastrophic flooding that struck Charleston and Columbia, he directed four boat teams, successfully completing over 180 rescues and logging more than 400 boat operating hours. His hands-on experience and quick decision-making skills have undoubtedly made a lasting imprint on the disaster response community.
