Witter excitedly shared, “We’ve seen our programs really take off during the last several years—from **12,000 hot meals served in 2020 to 36,000 hot meals served last year.**” With the ongoing inflation in food prices, combined with the growing population of those in need in Beaufort and Jasper counties, the mission of BCSK becomes even more essential.
Currently, the organization faces a significant challenge, with a **shortfall of $50,000 to $55,000** in its food and supplies budget for the current year. “We know there are generous individuals, churches, and businesses who will help support us in our mission to serve the underserved,” Witter said with hope in her voice.

The roots of BCSK run deep in the Bluffton community, originally established in 2011 by Witter’s mother, Ida Martin. As Witter dedicates her retirement years to continuing her mother’s legacy, it is clear that the values of compassion and empathy were passed down. Martin earned national recognition in 2011 when she was awarded the **Presidential Citizens Medal** by President Barack Obama, who praised her unwavering commitment to helping those in need.
Reflecting on her mother’s journey, Witter explained, “When Ms. Ida saw a need, she filled it. She was a dreamer and a doer with ideas as big as her heart.” Martin’s philosophy wasn’t just about providing aid but empowering individuals to uplift themselves. Education, according to Witter, is vital to breaking the cycle of dependence on assistance.**
A Hub of Support
Located at **Campbell Chapel Church on 25 Boundary Street**, BCSK has grown remarkably since its inception. Not only does it serve hot meals, but it also provides a **delivery program for homebound clients** who are unable to visit the center. They can receive a warm meal right at their doorstep every Monday and Wednesday. Those who can visit the center can stop by for **To-Go meals** available at 1 p.m. on the same days. Additionally, an outdoor Food Pantry is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday to assist those in need.
In its foundational year, BCSK delivered **500 home-cooked hot meals**. Fast forward ten years, and that number swelled to an impressive **35,000 meals served in 2022**, with expectations of nearly **40,000 meals in 2023**. Apart from hot meals, the organization provides myriad non-perishable necessities through its kitchen pantry, ensuring that no one around Bluffton goes hungry.

Witter emphasizes that opportunities for change created by their programs extend beyond just food. “It’s about making someone else’s life better and believing in their ability to change their circumstances,” she said. With year-round operations, except during Christmas and New Year, BCSK is always ready to offer support and sustenance.
