Bluffton Community Gears up for DJ’s Day of Giving
In a remembrance act that has turned into a community tradition, locals from Bluffton, South Carolina are setting the stage for the upcoming annual charity event, DJ’s Day of Giving. Scheduled for this Saturday, this initiative honors the memory of Dwon Fields Jr., fondly recognized by his friends and family as DJ.
A Tragic Loss Turned into a Community Movement
DJ, a high school senior, tragically lost his life to gun violence about three years ago in Bluffton. In his memory, his family transformed their sorrow into a positive drive, dedicating themselves to serve the community that DJ cherished. These efforts culminated in the creation of the annual charity event DJ’s Day of Giving, a day when local businesses donate 10% of their profits to the Live Like DJ Scholarship Fund.
The Purpose of the Fund
“It’s for the kids that have fought their way to earn the right for the next-level education,” said Tim Wood, a community organizer. DJ was on the same path before he was grievously taken from his family and community. His father, Dwon Fields Sr., continues to honor his son’s legacy. “It’s allowing us to help other people and that’s the kind of person DJ was,” Fields Sr. added.
Participation in DJ’s Day of Giving
This year, the event has witnessed the participation of more than 50 restaurants. Last year’s charity day was a success, providing scholarships to 12 high school seniors. The aim is to further grow the event and increase its impact. “All I can ask is everyone to eat local on Saturday. We pretty much have every restaurant in Bluffton that’s participating,” said a representative from the event.
Whether locals choose to take part by enjoying Caribbean dishes at Red Stripes Caribbean Cuisine and Lounge or visiting any other participating venue, everyone involved understands that such participation would make DJ proud.
Grieving a Loss, Celebrating a Legacy
In the aftermath of the tragic loss of DJ, the community was united in grief. Now, the same unity is witnessed in the celebration of his life and the optimistic, persevering spirit he embodied. “The community recognizes what DJ was and still is,” concluded Tim Wood.
