Bluffton, SC – The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) held its annual commencement exercises outdoors on April 26, 2024, marking a significant milestone for many graduates as they received their coveted degrees. With nearly 366 degrees conferred during the academic year, the event was filled with excitement and pride for the graduating students, families, and faculty members present.
The ceremony featured USCB Chancellor Al M. Panu, who presided over the event, while Michael Amiridis, the president of the University of South Carolina system, delivered the keynote address. The commencement was further honored by the presence of Richard (Dick) Stewart, an environmentalist and philanthropist from Beaufort, who received an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service. Rev. Alex Glenn, a distinguished USCB alumnus from the Class of 2020, provided the invocation and benediction.
The commencement ceremony took place on the library plaza on the Bluffton campus, providing a vibrant backdrop for the 265 graduates who participated in the ceremony this spring. An additional 101 degrees were conferred in December, bringing the annual total to 366 graduates. The atmosphere was filled with celebration, as friends, family, and faculty gathered to recognize the achievements of the students completing their bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
This commencement is significant not only for the graduates but also for the community. By achieving their degrees, these students have taken important steps toward their future careers and contributions to society. USC Beaufort continues to play a vital role in education within the Lowcountry region, developing individuals equipped to address local and global challenges.
In light of the recent developments in education, the Beaufort County school system reported a slight improvement in the 2024 South Carolina Report Cards for schools. This comes as schools strive to enhance educational programs, especially in areas affected by teaching methodologies that have, in the past, shown to hinder academic performance. A decade of relying on pre-packaged lessons reportedly led to decreased student achievement in some cases, emphasizing the need for innovative instructional strategies.
The commencement at USCB also highlighted ongoing conversations about educational improvement and the changes required to optimize the learning experience for students. As community members engage in discussions regarding curriculum adjustments, there’s hope for a renewed focus on personalized learning and resources that align with student needs.
As the graduates step into the next chapter of their lives, they bring with them the knowledge and skills cultivated during their time at USC Beaufort. The ceremony concluded on a hopeful note, with messages of encouragement for the graduates to make impactful contributions wherever their journeys may lead. The sense of community and support present during the event underscored the importance of education in shaping a brighter future for both individuals and society as a whole.
