Hey there, Beaufort! As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season kicks into high gear, it seems like the weather wants to remind us that winter is just around the corner. Yes, hurricane season has officially come to an end, but instead of warm tropical breezes, we’re looking at a blast of cold that’s set to sweep through our lovely Lowcountry.
This past Friday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston issued a frost advisory for our area, and it includes some other nearby towns such as< b> Hilton Head, Townsend, Edisto Beach, Savannah, Pooler, and Garden City. If you were thinking about leaving your delicate outdoor plants unprotected, you might want to reconsider! Temperatures could plunge down to a nippy 33 degrees between the hours of 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday. Yep, that means frost could form overnight, putting your precious flowers and veggie patches at risk.
But that’s not all, folks. The chilly temperatures are expected to stick around into early next week. We’re not looking at any balmy beach days, with forecasted highs barely scraping the 50s and nighttime lows just a hair above freezing. You might want to dig out those blankets and cozy sweaters because the cold is here to stay for a bit.
So what can you do to protect your outdoor plants from the potential frost damage? Here are some helpful tips:
Taking these simple steps can make a big difference in the health of your plants, so don’t delay! Your green thumbs will thank you later.
Now, on to the good news — our hurricane season officially wrapped up on Saturday! After a tumultuous year with storm names like Debby and Helene making headlines, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Frank Strait, severe weather liaison with the South Carolina State Climate Office, joyfully announced, “It’s over!” Phew!
This year certainly brought its challenges, especially with Debby drenching our state during August rains and Helene wreaking havoc in September. But with the wildlife winds behind us, our focus shifts to bundling up for the chilly months ahead.
So while you’re getting used to wearing your winter coat (for those of us in Beaufort, that’s a big deal!), remember to keep an eye on the weather. The turning of the seasons is a wonderful time to cozy up at home with a hot cup of cocoa or take a brisk walk outside to enjoy the stunning Lowcountry scenery.
But don’t get too comfy just yet, Beaufort! Winter can surprise us, so let’s stay vigilant and be prepared for the changes ahead. Grab those warm boots and start checking on those plants, because despite the end of hurricane season, the weather isn’t pulling any punches!
