Beaufort’s Shrimp Festival Set to Dock Boats Amid Waterfront Repairs

Shrimp Boats Docked Festively

Beaufort’s Shrimp Festival Brings Back the Boats!

BEAUFORT, S.C. — It’s that time of year again in the Lowcountry when the crunch of shrimp shells and the laughter of families fill the air at the Beaufort Shrimp Festival. This celebration of the region’s rich maritime heritage is just a few days away, and excitement is bubbling up! But there’s been a bit of a hiccup that has worried residents and local businesses: Where would all those iconic shrimp boats park during the festival?

Waterfront Challenges and Solutions

For those who may not know, there’s a serious issue lurking below the waters of Beaufort’s famed Waterfront Park. The support structures under the seawall have been experiencing some major deterioration, and as a result, cruise ships have been banned from docking. But here comes some good news—just in time for the festival!

Late last Wednesday, city officials announced that O’Quinn Marine will be installing eight pilings that will allow shrimp boats to tie up at the seawall during the festival on October 4-5. The pilings will be positioned just six inches from the seawall and will extend for 150 feet.

A Temporary but Effective Solution

This temporary solution will enable the shrimp boats to dock without adding any strain to the already troubled relieving platform beneath the water. City Manager Scott Marshall shared his thoughts on this proactive approach: “To me, it’s a small price to pay to preserve some of the character of the city of Beaufort.” A reassuring statement for those concerned about maintaining the festival’s lively nautical vibe!

The total cost for this project is around $14,800. Luckily, local businesses such as Sea Eagle Market and Gay Fish Co. are stepping up and contributing $3,700 to help cover costs, which shows the community spirit is very much alive here in Beaufort.

Checking Under the Surface

To understand how we got to this point, let’s look at some background. Back on April 18, engineers conducted a thorough inspection of the Waterfront structures and discovered signs of serious wear and tear. Of the 570 pilings supporting the seawall, a staggering 46 were found with moderate to major deterioration, and seven were entirely broken. This situation has raised many eyebrows, especially among local business owners who thrive on the tourist traffic generated by events like the Shrimp Festival.

The concerns are valid. Since 2018, the city has spent over $1 million repairing these structural issues. City officials believe a comprehensive long-term fix could soar to around $100 million. With the city currently evaluating proposals from various contractors, the hope is to find a solution that safeguards the park and its vital role in the community.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

The Shrimp Festival isn’t just a fun outing; it’s a celebration of the hardworking watermen and women who keep this coastal community thriving. The charming sight of shrimp boats bobbing in the Beaufort River has become a staple of the festival, and this year, with the new pilings in place, you can expect plenty of photo ops, delicious seafood, and a community coming together.

So pack your bags and gather your loved ones, because Bordertown is ready to celebrate its rich heritage and ensure that the spirit of the shrimp boats will not be lost this year. Cheers to the shrimp, the boats, and the community that makes Beaufort such a special place!
