Welcome to the charming city of Beaufort, where preparations are already underway for one of the most anticipated events of the year—the Beaufort Shrimp Festival, happening on October 4-5! This year, visitors can look forward to a fresh addition at the festival, with the recent installation of pilings that will facilitate the mooring of shrimp boats right next to the scenic seawall at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.
Last week, O’Quinn Marine Construction was busy at work, setting up eight sturdy pilings along the waterfront, just six inches from the existing seawall, spanning a total of 150 feet. These pilings will provide a practical, temporary solution for shrimp boats, allowing them to be part of the festival celebrations without stressing the relieving platform that supports the park.
According to City Manager Scott Marshall, this project had been on the drawing board for a while. “We had discussions among our staff about the cost and feasibility before deciding it was a strong investment,” he shared. The city was keen to ensure that the installations would be ready in time for the shrimp festival, so it was crucial to get started right away.
For local shrimpers and festival-goers alike, having the shrimp boats at the event represents a longstanding tradition. Though this year’s adaptations are temporary, they play a big role in maintaining the festival’s authenticity. “It’s not just about the boats; it’s about the connection to our local maritime culture and the community vibe we create,” said a local vendor.
Marshall emphasized the city fulfilled all necessary permitting steps before jumping into installation. “This was well within the authorization I had to spend,” he noted, making the decision feel even more justified.
The entire commissioning process took just a couple of days, with O’Quinn kicking off the work on September 19 and wrapping it up the very next day. However, while shrimp boats will be moored in view of festival activities, it’s important to highlight that these pilings will not accommodate cruise ships, ensuring the festival retains its unique charm without overwhelming traffic.
As excitement builds for the upcoming festival, residents and visitors can enjoy the prospect of seeing local shrimp boats taking center stage alongside the many festivities planned for that weekend. From delicious shrimp dishes to fun games and community bonding, it’s truly a time for everyone to come together, celebrate, and enjoy the beautiful coastal city of Beaufort.
If you haven’t marked your calendars yet, now is the time! The Beaufort Shrimp Festival promises delightful culinary experiences, entertainment, and a chance to connect with the rich seafood traditions of our local area, all enhanced by the stunning backdrop of the waterfront.
