Beaufort Residents Voice Concerns at Ribaut Road Master Plan Open House
Beaufort, a charming city known for its picturesque views and friendly community, hosted an open house on Friday night, October 25th, to discuss the latest updates on the much-debated Ribaut Road Master Plan, also referred to as Reimagine Ribaut. The gathering took place at the Technical College of the Lowcountry and served as a platform for citizens to review proposed design alternatives and share their thoughts on the plan.
This initiative is a collaborative effort among several key stakeholders, including Beaufort County, the City of Beaufort, the Town of Port Royal, and Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. The goal is to enhance the 5.5-mile corridor stretching from Boundary Street to the Russell Bell Bridge by improving safety, accessibility, and aesthetics along the busy route.

One couple, Robert and Elizabeth Smith from Port Royal, shared their feelings, stating, “There are a lot of alternatives, but ultimately it’s still really difficult, especially at Bay to Boundary [streets]. It’s really hard to fix and keep residential.” Their sentiments echoed the frustration in the room regarding the limited direct engagement offered during the open house.

Stacey Shoemaker chimed in, expressing her deep frustration about the process. She said, “The fact they started with Reimagine Ribaut and changed the name without bringing it to the community tells [me] they will change it to whatever they want because they don’t give two craps about the people it’s affecting.” Such comments reflect a sentiment shared by many who feel that their voices were not adequately heard.
While attendees could place blue stickers on their preferred designs, many found the lack of identifiable staff or officials to answer their questions acted as a barrier to productive discussion. Without a clear way to know who to direct their questions to, residents felt disconnected from the planning process.
