Beaufort’s Beloved Police Chief Announces Retirement
Beaufort, SC – It’s a bittersweet time in our charming seaside city as Police Chief Dale McDorman has announced his retirement, effective January 26, 2024. Chief McDorman has been part of the Beaufort Police Department since 1995 and took the reins as chief in July 2020 after the sad passing of former Chief Matt Clancy. His years of service have been marked by a commitment to safety and community engagement, making him a cherished figure within our community.
A Legacy of Service
Chief McDorman’s journey with the Beaufort Police Department is nothing short of remarkable. Over the course of nearly three decades, he has witnessed vast changes within the department and the community. His deep dedication was especially felt during challenging times, where he worked tirelessly to uphold the integrity of our police force and protect our citizens. While we will certainly miss his steady leadership and friendly demeanor, it’s clear his impact on Beaufort will resonate for years to come.
Remembering a Local Icon
Perhaps not everyone knows that Chief McDorman is stepping down around the anniversary of another significant loss in our city; the late Harriet Keyserling. Known for her fierce advocacy for women’s rights and her extensive career in the state legislature, Keyserling served Beaufort for 16 years. She passed away on December 10, 2010, at the age of 88 due to kidney failure, leaving behind a powerful legacy. She worked hard on issues surrounding energy, nuclear waste, the arts, and education during her time serving the people of South Carolina, and her influence on Beaufort continues to be felt today.
Exciting Events in Beaufort
In other joyful news, Beaufort has been bustling with energy lately, due in part to festive events such as the upcoming Colonial Ball. This annual celebration doesn’t just bring our community together but is also filled with rich history and excitement, serving as a nod to our colonial past. A favorite highlight has to be the reenactment of the arrival of a French aristocrat, which brings the streets alive with color and enthusiasm!
Community Milestones
It hasn’t all been about celebrations, as our town has also experienced significant milestones in recent years. Back in November 2022, HELP of Beaufort broke ground on a new facility at 1600 Ribaut Road. This facility is set to provide vital services and support to those in need right here in our community, showcasing the spirit of giving that Beaufort residents embody.
Moreover, we recently witnessed the naming of the swimming pool at the Charles Lind Brown Center. This newly named facility is bound to provide endless hours of fun and relaxation for families and friends, proving yet again that Beaufort is a great place for community recreation.
Historically Speaking
As we enjoy our present, it’s always good to remember the past. On November 7, 1861, history was made as Union warships attacked Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island and Fort Beauregard on Phillips Island. These events remind us of the complexities and rich history that our beautiful region holds.
What’s Next for Beaufort?
As we look ahead, there’s much to be excited about in Beaufort. With the upcoming retirement of Chief McDorman, the city will soon be on the lookout for a new leader who can continue his legacy of service and community involvement. It’s a brand-new chapter for our beloved town, and we’re all eager to see what the future brings. Until then, let’s continue to celebrate, participate in community events, and cherish the bonds that make Beaufort a truly special place to call home!
