Beaufort Gears Up for the Ninth Annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival
Beaufort is set to welcome book lovers from all over as it prepares to host the Ninth Annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival on November 1 and 2. This year’s theme celebrates the essential role of libraries and librarians in creating an inviting space for readers and storytellers alike. The festival, which has become a beloved event for both local citizens and literary tourists, also opens its doors with free tours on October 31 and November 3.
An Event for Everyone
Ever since its inception, the Conroy Festival has grown in popularity, attracting countless visitors who revel in all things literary. Local readers, writers, educators, and students will find a treasure trove of activities and programs, ranging from author conversations and readings to writers workshops and panel discussions. And for families? There’s something special for them too, with a fun read-aloud event just for kids!
Star-Studded Guest Lineup
This year’s festival is excited to host several renowned authors. Attendees can look forward to engaging discussions led by bestselling children’s authors Kwame Alexander and Raj Haldar, as well as celebrated adult fiction writers like Kirsten Miller and Cassandra King. Plus, festival-goers can catch a lively discussion featuring Southern women mystery authors including Susan M. Boyer and Alicia Bessette, among others. The lineup also boasts a dedicated session on Freedom to Read, addressing the vital conversation around education censorship.
A Special Tribute to Librarians
Libraries are often referred to as the heart of our communities, and this festival recognizes their invaluable contributions. A tribute to librarians will precede a private screening of the documentary film Banned Together, which highlights challenges faced by these champions of knowledge. Following the screening, producers Tom and Jenn Wiggin will lead a discussion, making it an evening of enlightening insights.
Workshops and Educational Programs
For those eager to hone their writing skills, a variety of writers workshops will be available. Attendees will get the chance to learn about poetry, prose writing, and the ins and outs of getting published from talented instructors like Tim Conroy and Chad Rhoad. These workshops are a fantastic opportunity to dive deeper into the art of storytelling.
A Vibrant Community Affair
What makes this festival truly unique is the community involvement. High school and college volunteers from the Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization (DAYLO) will lead a read-aloud session at the Port Royal Farmers Market, bringing joy to young readers and their families. The festival embodies a spirit of unity, showcasing how literature connects us all.
