The Parade in Beaufort

Starting at 10 a.m., the parade will kick off from the Beaufort National Cemetery, proceeding through a vibrant route that includes Adventure Street, Boundary, Carteret, Bay, and Bladen streets. With the city streets adorned with decorations and the air filled with excitement, families can expect a lively atmosphere as they gather to witness the colorful floats, local organizations, and enthusiastic marchers.

Traffic Advisory

As always, parade day can bring some traffic headaches, so it is wise to stay informed. A traffic advisory is in place, noting potential delays and road closures throughout Beaufort County due to both parade and memorial events planned for the day. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly to avoid any unexpected detours.

Honors Across the County

The celebration doesn’t stop in Beaufort! On the stunning Hilton Head Island, the Hilton Head MLK Committee for Justice will also host its annual memorial march on the same day, paying tribute to Dr. King’s legacy. Meanwhile, Bluffton will conduct its own march organized by the Bluffton MLK Observance Committee, starting at 2 p.m. from the May River Theater and concluding at Oyster Factory Park. Each of these events reflects the community’s commitment to honoring the values that Dr. King advocated.

Holiday Observances

Since January 20 is a federal holiday, many administrative offices, banks, and mail centers throughout Beaufort County will be closed. However, it’s good to remember that emergency services will continue to operate, ensuring safety for all citizens. Additionally, the Beaufort County Convenience Center will temporarily close on January 20 and will reopen the following day at 7:30 a.m.

What’s Open and What’s Closed?

Don’t worry if you’re planning to grab some last-minute groceries or enjoy a meal out! Most grocery stores, chain restaurants, and retail outlets will remain open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so there’s no need to miss out on shopping or dining.

Community Events Leading Up to the Holiday

MLK Community Service Project will take place on January 18, focusing on cleaning historical Gullah cemeteries. Volunteers are encouraged to lend a hand in this labor of love.

Additionally, there will be a fun and creative opportunity for families and individuals to get involved in a poster-making event on January 19 at 39 Persimmon Street from 6 to 8 p.m. This event invites participants to craft spirited posters for the parade, adding flair and creativity to the festivities.

Celebrations on January 20

On January 20, come out for a memorable memorial program and youth day at the May River Theatre in Bluffton. Local youth will take center stage showcasing their talents through performances and commentary, filling the air with inspiration and energy.

Dine & Dance Sneaker Ball

January 25! The Hilton Head MLK Committee for Justice will host a Dine & Dance Sneaker Ball, where fun and fundraising come together. Tickets are available for $85, and it promises to be a night filled with joy and community spirit.
