Women’s Health Care

Exciting News for Women’s Health Care in Beaufort!

Hey there, Beaufort! We have some fantastic news to share for all the women in our community. In an effort to enhance and expand access to women’s health care, Beaufort Memorial Hospital has just welcomed two extraordinary providers to their Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists: Dr. Curtis J. Elam, a highly experienced obstetrician and gynecologist, and Melissa Mesenburg, a compassionate nurse practitioner.

Your New Healthcare Team

Both Dr. Elam and Mesenburg will be seeing patients at the practice’s locations in Okatie and Beaufort. This is a significant step forward as it aims to provide top-notch care tailored to women at every stage of life, from routine check-ups to specialized treatments.

Dr. Elam comes with a wealth of experience, having spent decades in the field. His expertise ranges from general, routine, to specialized obstetrical and gynecological care, which means he’s well-equipped to assist you with a variety of health needs. Notably, he has extensive training in laparoscopic and robotic surgeries and is particularly skilled in pelvic floor reconstruction and treating stress urinary incontinence. For those of you who may have questions about these procedures, you’ll be in highly knowledgeable hands!

From Service to Medical Degree

Dr. Elam earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed his residency at Vanderbilt University. Having known he wanted to pursue a career in medicine from a young age, he served in the active-duty U.S. Naval Reserve, where he worked as both a battalion and regimental surgeon with the Marines. Since 1992, he’s dedicated his career to obstetrics and gynecology, and his most recent position was at the Clyburn Center for Primary Care in Aiken, South Carolina.

Joining him is Melissa Mesenburg, who recently graduated with a Doctor of Nursing Practice focusing on family nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina. Mesenburg’s doctoral thesis centered on improving women’s health through educational initiatives, a topic she’s deeply passionate about. She has four years of experience as a family nurse practitioner in the Beaufort area and was previously the director of clinical operations at Friends of Caroline Hospice in Ridgeland, SC. With her roots as a postpartum nurse at Beaufort Memorial’s Collins Birthing Center, Melissa deeply understands the needs and concerns of women’s health.

Comprehensive Care at Your Convenience

Dr. Elam and Mesenburg will join a knowledgeable team that includes board-certified doctors and certified nurse practitioners, all focused on making your health care experience as welcoming and supportive as possible. This inclination towards patient-centered care reflects the overall mission of Beaufort Memorial, to provide the full range of women’s health services in our area.

Services offered in the Okatie Medical Pavilion at 122 Okatie Center Boulevard North and the Beaufort Medical Plaza at 989 Ribaut Road include comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care, equipped with the latest technology like state-of-the-art digital ultrasounds. It’s comforting to know that all your health care needs can be met in such well-equipped facilities.
