Beaufort Mayoral Candidates Discuss Key Issues Ahead of Election Day

Beaufort Gears Up for Mayoral Election with Key Issues on the Table

As Beaufort approaches a crucial election date on November 5, the community is buzzing with discussions about the candidates and their positions on pressing local issues. Candidates Josh Scallate and Phil Cromer recently shared their thoughts with the public, offering insights into what they envision for the city’s future.

Marina Management and Community Engagement

One of the hot topics is the future of the marina. Both candidates agree that community input is essential for making informed decisions. “The appropriate path forward is what it was in 2019,” Scallate said, emphasizing the need to understand what the community desires in a marina. He proposed methods like conducting surveys, hosting discussions, and facilitating conversations among residents.

Cromer also advocates for a public survey, suggesting that it is vital to determine the direction for the marina’s lease to a management company. “Since an ordinance to lease the marina to Safe Harbor was not done in 2019, the lease is invalid,” he pointed out. His preference leans towards contracting a saltwater marina operator, thereby allowing the city to benefit from slip and mooring fees placed in a municipal fund. This concept aims to address future repair needs and infrastructure without burdening the taxpayer.

Addressing Waterfront Park’s Issues

Another concern is the structural integrity of Waterfront Park, which both candidates recognize as a vital asset to Beaufort. Cromer mentioned that the city is actively interviewing consultants to provide options for fixing the park’s structural issues. “Since the park is our ‘crown jewel,’ we hope to attract state and federal funding,” he noted. Concerning the chosen option, considerations will be made to minimize disruption to park visitors, ensuring that everyone can continue to enjoy this cherished space.

Development Codes and Growth Management

As Beaufort continues to grow, the candidates also tackled the topic of development regulations. Scallate highlighted that the city’s development code and comprehensive plans need to align better. He believes that easy-to-understand policies would help foster green spaces, tree coverage, and pathways in new developments. “This would promote multimodal transportation, which residents have identified as a priority,” he remarked.

Cromer pointed out that growth occurs mostly along Highway 170, where development agreements have existed for years. He stressed the necessity to revisit zoning regulations to prioritize sustainable growth while also conserving natural spaces. “Significant public input and regional collaboration will be required to achieve these goals,” he asserted.

Community Priorities and Youth Engagement

Both candidates expressed a strong commitment to ensuring that the community’s voice is heard in decision-making processes. Scallate suggested engaging with residents from the onset of projects to grasp firsthand knowledge of the concerns. “Building a transparent and responsive government will remain a priority,” he committed.

Cromer echoed this sentiment, stating that public engagement is crucial for a successful and united community. He asserts that all voices need to shape policies that address infrastructure challenges and other pressing issues in Beaufort.

Preservation of Quality of Life

As the conversation turned to quality of life, both candidates reflected on the importance of parks and green spaces. Scallate proudly speaks about how Southside Park evolved into a well-loved community gathering spot. “Parks play a vital role in any community,” he added, noting his pride in being involved in such transformations.

Similarly, Cromer has been a supporter of improvements to less-served areas. “Parks significantly improve quality of life and provide recreational opportunities for all,” he stated. He believes that maintaining open spaces also contributes to environmental conservation.

A Vision for the Future

As both candidates move closer to election day, they aim to inspire the community to envision a future where history and progress coexist. Scallate expressed a desire to strike a balance of honoring the past while preparing for the future. He hopes that a transparent government can serve all facets of the community. Cromer, meanwhile, emphasizes public safety as a priority while advocating for fiscal responsibility and sustainable growth.

With election day on the horizon, residents of Beaufort have the opportunity to consider these candidates and their visions for a brighter, more inclusive future. As conversations continue and community engagement grows, the chance to shape the city’s path forward is in the hands of its citizens.
