City of Beaufort removing palmettos that are endangering live oaks at Evergreen Cemetery

BEAUFORT, S.C. – Palmettos grow rampant at the Evergreen Cemetery in Beaufort. Passers-by on Monday might have noticed the distinct sight of palm trees being cut down. The City of Beaufort, after being advised by a master arborist, initiated the removal of these palmettos due to an uncommon situation where they were directly threatening the existence of live oak trees.

Palmettos Becoming A Threat To Live Oaks

The issue with the palmettos is that they were growing directly into the branches of the live oak trees at the cemetery. Such growth prevents the essential ventilation and light penetration for the live oaks, and thus negatively impacts their health. Unfortunately, relocation of these palm trees isn’t an option. The extensive underground rooting system of the trees has expanded directly underneath the graves, and thus their removal could disrupt the resting places.

Significance Of Inner Canopy And Tree Health

An expert arborist consulted by the City of Beaufort reported that the palms threaten the inner canopy of the live oaks. The inner canopy is a critical component of the tree’s structure, housing a group of branches that ensures survival on losing outer branches as it ages.

“The live oaks, much like us humans, need to shed some to move around a bit more. But unlike us, they need to have their inner canopy intact to retain limbs that might have a dead end or something of that sort.” added Michael Murphy, a local Master Arborist.

Local’s View on the Matter

Residents living nearby who enjoy the view of the trees from their window have shown unreserved support for this decision. “We’re actually happy about it because we don’t want trees competing against each other that’ll eventually lead to both their deaths. So, it’s better to focus on preserving the healthiest,” commented Rick Hamilton, a local resident.

Master Arborist Murphy reinstated the importance of keeping the live oak’s inner canopy healthy, as it allows them to live indefinitely. He also ensured the locals that the removal of the palms will not affect the shade provided by the trees, as the live oaks will still be able to reach out and offer shade coverage.

All in all, this step by the City of Beaufort is seen as a necessary action to prevent the gradual decay of the majestic live oak trees and preserve an essential part of the Evergreen Cemetery’s charm. The removal of the palmettos will not only enhance the longevity of the oaks but also ensure a harmonious ecosystem within the cemetery.
