Beaufort, S.C. – It was a moment of joy and recognition last Friday, as Bluffton Elementary School celebrated one of its own – Laura VanHorn has been named the 2024-2025 District Teacher of the Year for Beaufort County! With an impressive 37 years of experience under her belt, VanHorn is known for her passion and commitment to her young students.
Standing amid colleagues and fellow educators, VanHorn expressed her feelings about the honor: “It’s an honor.” Her enthusiasm for teaching is infectious. What keeps her going, she reveals, is the unpredictability of each day, along with the authenticity that children bring into the classroom. “There’s no way to predict what’s going to happen because kids are so honest and genuine. I work in early childhood, so you just never know, and that makes it worth getting up for every day,” she added with a smile.
Those who know VanHorn personally can attest to her dedication. Principal Christine Brown took a moment to applaud her efforts, saying, “Every day, her focus is ‘What can I do to make sure my students are successful?’” Brown highlighted VanHorn’s initiative in furthering education, sharing how she applied for a grant to create a school garden. This garden isn’t just a beautiful addition to the school grounds; it provides students with important hands-on learning experiences that they’ll cherish.
While VanHorn takes the top honor, she wasn’t alone in the spotlight. Four other talented educators were recognized as finalists for the 2024-2025 District Teacher of the Year. They are Dr. Karen Parker from Lady’s Island Middle School, Melanie Willis from Daufuskie Island Elementary, Cinderella Shaw from Lady’s Island Elementary, and Timothy Huesing from Hilton Head Island Middle School. Each of these educators has made significant contributions to their students and communities, embodying the spirit of education.
In her application for this esteemed recognition, VanHorn reminisced about her early passion for teaching, sparked during her college years. Her journey has been fulfilling, and she hopes her award serves as a beacon of inspiration for new and upcoming educators. “In a time when many young teachers are quitting, I think it’s important they see that some of us are still here, still doing what we love, and fighting for the profession, for kids, and for families,” she stated, reflecting on the challenges often faced in the teaching profession.
Beaufort County’s celebration of its teachers reminds us all of the critical role that educators play in shaping young minds and making a difference in their communities. With dedicated individuals like Laura VanHorn at the helm, we can look forward to a brighter future for our children!
