Beaufort, South Carolina – The South Carolina Department of Public Health and the Beaufort County Health Department have announced an upcoming event offering free breast cancer screenings, mammograms, and cervical checks to qualifying women. The event is slated for Monday, July 29, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In collaboration with the Best Chance Network, free mammograms will be provided to qualifying women aged 21 to 64 who are either without insurance or have a high insurance deductible. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women in South Carolina. It’s also the second most common cause of cancer-related death. Regular mammograms are essential since they can detect breast cancer before there are signs or symptoms. Treatment of breast cancer found in the early stages has proven largely successful.
The free breast cancer screening event will be held at the Beaufort County Health Department located at 601 Wilmington Street. This initiative aims to increase breast cancer awareness and early detection in the local community. Women who meet the qualifying criteria are strongly encouraged to participate. Appointments can be scheduled by making a call on 843-792-0878.
Alexa Steiner, a researcher from the HERE News Network presented some worrying data on the reasons behind the urgency of such initiatives. According to her, “In South Carolina alone, thousands of women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and sadly many lives are lost due to late detection”. Early detection through mammograms improves the survival rates significantly. These free screenings provided by the Beaufort County Health Department serve as an invaluable step toward increased early detection and improved patient prognosis.
Local support for the free screenings has been overwhelming, with many seeing it as a positive stride toward health empowerment. Various local businesses and volunteer organizations are planning to offer their resources in support of the event. This community support underscores the shared determination to battle breast cancer in South Carolina. The joint effort is a clear testament to the community’s unity and dedication towards the cause.
This preventative health strategy initiative taken by the South Carolina Department of Public Health and Beaufort County Health Department represents a monumental step towards reducing the burden of breast cancer in South Carolina. Through this free screening event, women at risk will have the opportunity to take control of their health in a supportive and community-centered environment.
While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Beaufort County Health Department continues to pledge its commitment to provide the necessary medical resources for the community’s healthcare needs. The department urges all qualifying women to take advantage of this free screening opportunity and looks forward to a healthier society, one free screening at a time.
