News Summary

Beaufort County is under a winter storm warning as the National Weather Service forecasts a significant cold weather blast beginning Tuesday evening. Residents should prepare for snow accumulation between 4 to 6 inches and potential black ice on roads. With chilling wind chills expected to drop to around 16 degrees, it’s crucial to stay warm and cautious. Local cold shelters are open for those in need, and school schedules will be adjusted accordingly. Everyone is advised to stay informed about the changing weather conditions.

Winter Weather Advisory for Beaufort County Residents

Beaufort County is bracing itself for a cold weather blast as the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the area, set to take effect on Tuesday evening. The day may start ordinary, but as evening approaches, residents can expect a serious change in the weather.

Timing of the Storm

The snow and sleet are projected to begin around 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. While the day may be calm, it’s advisable to get home early and prepare for the fun yet slippery conditions that are expected to develop later in the evening. The hardest hit is forecasted to occur between 8 p.m. Tuesday and the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Snow Accumulation Predictions

Earlier estimates forecasted a modest 3 inches of snowfall, but recent updates have increased that range to between 4 to 6 inches. That’s quite a bit more than anticipated! However, if sleet pile-up turns out to be more than expected, it might lessen the total snow accumulation. So, we might end up with less snow depending on how everything falls into place.

Chilly Temperatures and Wind Chill Warnings

The frigid temperatures won’t make matters easier. Alarming wind chills in the area could dip down to around 16 degrees during the nights on Tuesday and Wednesday, which is creeping close to breaking some records for chilliness. With daytime temperatures hovering in the upper 30s to low 40s, it’s time to bundle up!

Caution on the Roads

Driving in these conditions will require extra caution, especially with warnings of potential black ice forming on roads after melting snow refreezes Wednesday night. So, if you have to head out, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for slippery spots and stay updated on traffic conditions.

Cold Shelters Available for Residents

If anyone needs a break from the cold, there are two local cold shelters open for residents needing warmth. Sea Island Presbyterian Church and Christ Lutheran Church are both providing meals and accommodations to those in need. It’s always good to have a cozy spot to get out of the chill!

School Updates

In response to the impending weather chaos, the Beaufort County School District has announced that there will be a half-day schedule on Tuesday, followed by a remote learning day on Wednesday. Things might change for Thursday, so keep an ear out for any updates which will be shared by 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

A Unique Weather Situation

This cold snap is quite unusual for our southern neck of the woods, and it’s primarily due to a low-pressure system rolling in from the Gulf of Mexico, accompanied by frigid air masses arriving from the Arctic. Many residents may not be used to handling this kind of winter weather, making this upcoming storm even more noteworthy!

Stay Informed and Safe

As the weather takes a turn, it’s essential for everyone to stay informed. Keep an eye on forecasts and travel conditions if you must head out. Get those shovels ready and enjoy the wonders this winter storm might bring while staying warm and safe!
