On September 14th and 21st this year, Beaufort County will stage its eighth annual Walk for Water event. Aimed at raising awareness of the world’s water crisis, the Beaufort County Walk for Water seeks to gather around 1,000 participants to raise an estimated sum of $100,000. The funds generated by this event are geared towards initiatives aimed at mitigating the global water crisis.
The global water crisis poses significant challenges to communities worldwide. Many developing nations struggle to access clean, safe, and sustainable water sources, a problem which the Beaufort County Walk for Water strives to address. Money garnered from the event is funneled into Water Mission, a Charleston-based nonprofit Christian engineering organization dedicated to building safe water solutions in developing countries and regions affected by disaster.
Last year, this event saw an extraordinary turnout of over 700 participants from both sides of the Beaufort River, a figure that event organizers are hopeful for this year as well. Registration for the event is ongoing and can be accessed through the Walk for Water website. Similarly, registration prices stand at $25 for adults aged 18 and older, $10 for youth between the ages of 5 and 17, juveniles aged 4 and younger are able to participate free of charge.
Participants in the 3-mile walk are encouraged to carry a bucket of water a portion of the way. This gesture is symbolic of the arduous task women and children in developing countries have to partake in daily to fetch often contaminated water. Moreover, this dangerous water often results in water-related illnesses that causes the death of one person every 37 seconds around the globe as per Water Mission.
Beaufort residents or those willing to take part in this philanthropic move will benefit from a $5 discount if they register by September 4th using the EARLYBIRD code. Additionally, all participants who register by the 13th of August will receive guaranteed preferred T-shirt sizes. There exists a limited-time matching gift donation of up to $10,000, allowing those who register now to double their impact.

Through the Walk for Water initiative, the Beaufort community is making strides against a global concern that impacts millions of lives worldwide. The annual event is a stark reminder that access to clean and safe water is a privilege. With the continued support and participation in such community-led initiatives, the fight against the global water crisis carries on, one step at a time.
