Beaufort County introduces the STAR Youth Leadership Program, aimed at empowering students to address substance abuse. Kicking off on January 16, this free program invites middle and high school students to engage in meaningful discussions about substance misuse, fostering resilience and informed choices. Developed in partnership with All Aboard Beaufort, it reflects the county’s commitment to combating the rising concerns of substance abuse among youth. This initiative is vital given the concerning increase in drug overdose deaths in South Carolina.
In Beaufort County, an exciting new initiative is taking shape aimed at empowering the next generation to speak up about one of the pressing issues of our time: substance abuse. Stay tuned, as Nexus Care of Beaufort County launches its STAR (Striving to Achieve Resiliency) Youth Leadership Program this January!
The inaugural meeting is slated for Thursday, January 16, and it’s the perfect opportunity for both middle school and high school students in the northern region to get involved. This event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will take place at the St. Helena Branch Library, located at 6355 Jonathan Francis Senior Road.
Best of all, this event is absolutely free and open to any interested students. So, if you’re looking to step up and contribute to a healthier community, mark your calendars!
The primary goal of the STAR Youth Leadership Program is to equip young people with the tools they need to engage their peers in constructive conversations about substance misuse. With communication skills and peer-to-peer interaction, the program aims to shine a light on the realities of substance abuse, paving the way for resilience and informed choices.
This energizing initiative is being rolled out in partnership with All Aboard Beaufort, a coalition committed to primary prevention efforts funded by a Drug-Free Communities award from the Centers for Disease Control. This partnership is dedicated to addressing issues surrounding substance abuse in northern Beaufort County, and students are encouraged to take part in these meaningful conversations.
It’s worth noting that the Beaufort County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Department, which is now known as Nexus Care, has a rich history—it recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The festivities were a nod to the invaluable work that has been done in the community over half a century. Former directors were present, showcasing the importance of continuity in building a healthy environment for all.
The mission of Nexus Care has always been clear: to reduce the negative impacts associated with alcohol and drugs through person-centered services. Their dedication has paved the way for a better understanding and support for individuals grappling with substance use issues.
The need for programs like STAR has never been more pressing. South Carolina has recently witnessed a concerning spike in drug overdose deaths, highlighting the urgent need for continuous dialogue surrounding substance abuse, particularly with the rising concerns over fentanyl.
Through this initiative, young people will have the chance to gain crucial knowledge and skills essential for a healthier future. It’s a great way for students to learn how to address these pressing issues not only for themselves but also to support their friends and families.
If you’re interested in participating, or if you know someone who might be, don’t hesitate to reach out! For more information or to RSVP for the event, you can contact Jodie Martinez. She would be more than happy to provide you with all the details you need.
Embracing this opportunity could make a significant difference. It’s all about cultivating a supportive community where our youth are empowered to make informed choices and help combat substance abuse head-on.
Take the first step towards being a part of this awesome initiative, and let’s work together for a healthier, brighter future for Beaufort County!
