Beaufort County Council Honors Former Mayor with New Library Branch

The Town of Port Royal in Beaufort County is set to be the location of a new library branch, as decreed by an official resolution of the Beaufort County Council on April 30, 2024. The resolution has named the new library after the former mayor of Port Royal, Samuel E. Murray, in honor of his remarkable service to the town.

The Legacy of Samuel E. Murray

The planned facility will be the first such one in the Town of Port Royal, located at 1408 Paris Avenue. Samuel E. Murray served diligently as a member of the Town Council for a total of 18 years, leading the town as Mayor for six consecutive terms. Over his expansive tenure, Murray pushed forward several projects for the beautification of the town, established new infrastructure, and nurtured the small business community. Murray was also significantly involved in the redevelopment of the port property, making it one of the town’s notable landmarks.

A Memorial to His Achievements

In recognition of Samuel E. Murray’s considerable contributions to the Town of Port Royal and Beaufort County at large, the County Council decided to name the new library branch in his honor. Council Member Alice Howard expressed her sentiment regarding this decision: “It’s wonderful that County Council could recognize Mayor Samuel E. Murray for his many years of service to the Town of Port Royal. His dedication to public education in Beaufort County and his commitment to public service to the Town of Port Royal helped make the town what it is today. Honoring his memory with this library branch will be a daily reminder of his legacy.”

Lynne Miller, Chair of the Library Board of Trustees, added: “The Beaufort County Library is proud to have the opportunity to open a new branch library in Port Royal which will be named in honor of Mayor Samuel E. Murray. During Mayor Murray’s six terms, he also saw to the redevelopment of Port Royal making it one of the jewels of the Low Country.”

The New Port Royal Library Branch

The resolution to name the facility after Samuel E. Murray was officially passed by the Beaufort County Council on Monday, April 22, 2024. With this significant decision, the Beaufort County Library System is now ambitiously aiming to open the Port Royal Branch Library location by this summer.

Currently, the Beaufort County Library System operates libraries in various locations including Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, Lobeco and St. Helena Island. Not stopping here, the County is also entertaining ideas to introduce new library locales in Burton and the Okatie/Bluffton area.
