News Summary

Beaufort County is set to implement a program providing free breakfast and lunch to all students for the 2024-2025 school year. This initiative, supported by the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), will expand to an additional thirteen schools, totaling twenty-five schools in the district. With a focus on healthy, balanced meals, the initiative ensures that all students can participate without the need for qualifying applications. Parents are relieved as this simplifies meal access, allowing students to concentrate on their education. The meals must meet nutritional guidelines, promoting healthy eating habits among students.

Exciting News for Students in Beaufort County!

Beaufort County is buzzing with excitement as it gears up for the 2024-2025 school year. In a fantastic move that promises to ease the burden on families, the county’s schools will now provide free breakfast and lunch to all students, thanks to the expansion of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This program is set to include thirteen additional schools, bringing the total to an impressive 25 schools across the district.

Why Is This Happening?

The *CEP* is designed for schools where more than 40% of the student body comes from low-income households. In Beaufort County, the district has an average poverty rate of 55.9%, which is lower than the state average of 60.6%. This highlights the need for such programs to support families in the community.

Who Gets the Meals?

The best part? There’s no need for parents or guardians to fill out any applications. All students will automatically be part of this initiative, allowing them to focus on what matters the most: their education and making friends. When they head through the cafeteria line, students will use their lunch pin numbers to record their meals, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience! Even if a student’s account doesn’t have money, they will still be able to enjoy the meals provided.

What’s on the Menu?

In order to meet federal and state guidelines, the meals will be balanced, requiring students to select fruits and vegetables along with their main dishes. This ensures that kids not only get full but also receive the necessary nutrients to fuel their active lifestyles. Students can choose up to four breakfast items and five lunch items at no cost, but anything beyond these limits will need to be paid for.

List of Schools Joining the Program

New schools participating in this exciting program include:

  • Academy for Career Excellence (ACE)
  • Battery Creek High School
  • Beaufort High School
  • Beaufort Middle School
  • Hilton Head Island Early Childhood Center
  • Hilton Head Island Elementary School
  • Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts
  • Daufuskie Island School
  • Hilton Head Island Middle School
  • Lady’s Island Middle School
  • Michael C. Riley Elementary School
  • Michael C. Riley Early Childhood Center
  • Red Cedar Elementary School

What About Nutritional Quality?

Some parents have expressed concerns regarding the nutritional quality of the meals served in schools. However, the district has assured parents that the well-being and nutritional needs of students will be a priority. With a focus on healthy meals, the program aims to support not just education but also students’ overall health and wellness.

Making Things Easier for Families

The *CEP* program also helps to simplify the administrative process by eliminating the need to handle free and reduced lunch applications, making life easier for both parents and school staff. In the 2024-2025 school year alone, the district will cater to over 10,000 students with free meals and around 1,300 students receiving reduced-price lunches through the National School Lunch Program.

Looking Ahead

The district plans to actively communicate the details of the no-cost meals to parents and students as the school year approaches. If any parents wish to opt-out of the program for any reason, they can easily reach out to the district’s food services accountant for assistance.

As August 7, 2024, draws nearer, the excitement builds in Beaufort County. The promise of free, healthy meals is sure to brighten the days of many students, helping them thrive in their educational journey.
