Hey there, Beaufort County! What a night it was for the 2024 general election held on November 5th, as voters in our beautiful community had their say and made their voices heard. It was a night filled with excitement, and we’ve got all the juicy details right here!
First up, let’s talk about those county council seats. Incumbents showed their popularity with a solid return to office! In District 1, Isaac Gordon III defeated Tradd C. Williams with a convincing 56.1% of the vote—a total of 1,958 votes to be exact. Now that’s what we call a clear choice!
In District 6, Alphonso Small Jr. enjoyed a remarkable victory, running unopposed and snatching up an impressive 98.7% of the votes! Can you say *landslide*? The same story unfolded in both District 9 and District 11 where Leah K. Frazier and Ingrid Boatright won unopposed with 98.9% and 99.4% of the votes, respectively. What a clean slate!
Let’s not forget our friends from Hilton Head! In District 2, Stuart Bell claimed victory over Steven A. Robinson Sr., garnering a comfortable 67.5% of the votes. It looks like the folks around there know who they want in office!
Similarly, in District 3, Patricia Flynn Soltys cemented her position running against absolutely no one, pulling in 98.4% of the votes. Quite a feat, don’t you think? District 4 was in the same boat, with Jerry Cutrer snagging 99.5% of the votes while having no opposition at all.
District 6’s Andrew Paterno also enjoyed a smooth ride, scoring 99.3% of the votes while running unopposed. Looks like several residents are secured in their positions with no challengers in sight!
Turning our gaze to Fripp Island, we have some intriguing competition in the public service commission! Edward D. Wetzel narrowly beat Rick Keup, Dennis Perrone, and John F. King with 26.2% of the votes. What a toss-up there! Wetzel’s victory must feel sweet after that tight contest.
On the other hand, Gary M. Nizzi took a solid 99.8% of the votes for the unexpired term on the Fripp Island Public Service Commission—no opponent to be seen this time!
Now let’s get to a rather hot topic—the penny tax! Voters decisively rejected the controversial measure proposed to fund infrastructure projects. With such a significant rejection, it’s clear that residents had their minds made up on this one. Infrastructure projects may have to find alternative funding solutions moving forward!
Over in nearby Jasper County, the tide turned as residents voted out their sheriff in favor of a former top cop. This change in leadership shows that the grassroots are alive and kicking! It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming months.
That wraps up the highlights from the Beaufort County election! While incumbents maintain their stronghold, the rejection of the penny tax indicates a clear message from the community. Stay tuned for more updates as your elected officials embark on the next chapter of serving our counties. Until next time, keep those voices strong and watch for more local news!
