Beaufort Co. Declares Daufuskie Island Ferry Operator Isn’t Up to Par

Concerns Raised by the Local Community

Daufuskie Islanders have expressed their discontentment after Beaufort County found its ferry operator’s performance to be unsatisfactory. Community members have lodged complaints about the lack of accessibility and unsafe conditions, including reports of injuries and an incident where an individual fell into the water due to a collapsing boat ramp. For several months, the county had not responded decisively to these concerns.

New Administration, New Steps

Beaufort County now has a new administrator who has taken swift action. The county issued an official statement, disclosing the ongoing collaboration with the Lowcountry Ferry to ensure that the operator fulfills its contractual obligations. “The well-being and satisfaction of our residents remain our top priority,” the administrator quoted in the statement. He further insisted on Lowcountry Ferry submitting an effective plan to improve the service.

The community has received this course of action positively. Kade Yaraborough, Chairman of Daufuskie Island Council, commended Beaufort County Staff, especially the newly appointed county administrator, Michael Moore.

Continued Criticism of Lowcountry Ferry

Since its establishment as the county’s ferry operator, Lowcountry Ferry has been the subject of community criticism. A significant number of incidents involving a lack of accessibility and personal injuries have tarnished its reputation. Most notably, the incident where a passenger fell into the water due to a boat ramp collapse raised alarms within the community.

Local representatives are urging the county and Lowcountry Ferry to resolve the ongoing issues before further incidents occur. They argue that failing to take action will endanger the county’s liability and fail to meet its responsibilities to the community. The last meeting between the island council and the ferry operator was held three weeks ago and no updates have been reported since the county’s announcement.

Attempts have been made to reach Lowcountry Ferry for comment, but they have yet to respond.
