BEAUFORT COUNTY, Beaufort County, South Carolina, welcomed the start of the Southcoast Cyber Center’s third-annual Cyber Summit on Monday. The two-day event focuses on maritime cybersecurity, bringing together politicians, professionals, military officials, and academic experts. Notably, the summit underscores the rapid growth of Beaufort County as a rising hub for cybersecurity.
The event began with a compelling message from Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina District 1, underscoring the critical significance of cybersecurity in the Lowcountry. She expressed, “We have a great hub of Cybersecurity professionals here in Beaufort County, and they have been actively working on cybersecurity for a few years now. We’re trying to build an even greater resource, and network and hub of cybersecurity professionals, especially when it comes to DOD-related cyber issues.”
Mace’s vision of fortifying the Lowcountry’s cybersecurity infrastructure involves a multi-pronged approach – looping in various levels of tech-led corporations. “That means, private industry, working together with the Chamber of Commerce, both in tech large and small, working with our federal agencies to ensure that we’re covered,” Mace explained.
County officials expressed the importance of having Beaufort County serve as a cybersecurity hub for the various industries operating within the county’s borders. Chairman of the Beaufort County Council, Joseph Passiment, emphasizes, “In Beaufort County, there is a lot of innovation going on with businesses, so they need to protect their data. Our military is large in Beaufort County, our County Government, so we want to protect all of the data. So days like today are very important.”
The Cyber Summit provides a platform to discuss the latest advancements and challenges in cybersecurity. By bringing together key stakeholders, the event promotes the exchange of ideas and fosters collaboration, contributing to the growth of Beaufort County as a burgeoning hub of cybersecurity.
The two-day event is critical in laying a solid foundation for the Lowcountry’s cybersecurity infrastructure. By fostering an active and participatory culture, the Cyber Summit is instrumental in fortifying the region’s cyber defenses. The event concludes on Tuesday.
