Beaufort County is gearing up for an extreme cold snap, with temperatures expected to drop significantly. In response, two cold weather shelters have been opened: one at Sea Island Presbyterian Church and another at Christ Lutheran Church. These shelters aim to provide a warm and safe environment for residents, offering meals and essential services. Community members are encouraged to look out for safety guidelines and assist those in need during this chilly weather.
Beaufort is getting ready to chill out, and we’re not talking about a cozy movie night at home! With a seriously cold front blowing through, the county has opened up two cold weather shelters to help keep residents warm during this frigid snap. If you’re feeling the nip in the air and are looking for a safe and warm place to hunker down, here’s what you need to know.
First up, you’ll find one shelter at Sea Island Presbyterian Church, located at 81 Lady’s Island Drive in Beaufort. This friendly place will be opening its doors from Monday, January 6 to Thursday, January 9. Get there by 5 p.m., and you can stay overnight until 8 a.m. the next morning. They’ll be serving up dinner, breakfast, and even showers to keep everyone comfortable and clean.
The second shelter is nestled at Christ Lutheran Church, found at 829 William Hilton Parkway in Hilton Head Island. This cozy spot will be open from Tuesday, January 7 through Thursday, January 9, starting a bit later at 5:30 p.m. and closing at 7:30 a.m. the next day. Guests can enjoy dinner and a handy to-go breakfast to kick off their day.
Remember to pack your essentials because both shelters have a few house rules to keep everyone safe and sound. No weapons, alcohol, smoking, or pets are allowed, but they do welcome service animals to join you! The weather forecast is looking mighty chilly, with daytime temps barely reaching the mid-40s to mid-50s and overnight lows plunging down to the mid-20s to low 30s. Just a heads up, inland areas are going to see even colder temperatures than those near the coast. And if that’s not enough to get your winter coat out, strong winds gusting up to 45 mph will make things feel even colder!
Mark your calendars for Wednesday night — that’s likely going to be the coldest of the week, with a bone-chilling forecast predicting temperatures dropping as low as 29 degrees Fahrenheit just before dawn on Friday. That’s definitely cold enough to make you want to stay snuggled under a blanket!
Local authorities are urging all citizens to keep an eye out for the 4 P’s: people, pets, pipes, and plants. Make sure to minimize your outdoor time, prepare for any potential power outages, keep your pets warm and dry, insulate those pesky pipes, and cover plants to protect them from the frostbite!
The good news is that, despite this cold front, we’re not expecting any snow or ice. Just a little rain that should clear out before the temperatures really start to drop. And even though our average January temperature is usually around 47.7 degrees Fahrenheit, this temporary cold spell is already the second one hitting the area in quick succession.
