Fire departments swiftly responded to incidents on Bruce K Smalls Drive and Kato Lane, where improper burning led to bigger blazes. A structural fire was also reported at Garden Oaks Apartments. With a noticeable rise in wildfire incidents, the South Carolina Forestry Commission emphasizes the need for cautious outdoor burning practices to prevent further disasters.
In a worrying turn of events, Beaufort County found itself dealing with several brush fires on a windy Thursday afternoon. The local fire departments were kept on their toes as flames flared up in various locations, prompting a serious warning from the South Carolina Forestry Commission.
The action kicked off around lunchtime, specifically at 12:30 p.m., when firefighters from the Burton Fire District responded to a backyard fire on Bruce K Smalls Drive. Upon arrival, they were greeted by a shed engulfed in flames and a threatening brush fire spreading nearby. Thanks to the prompt response, the brave firefighters quickly extinguished the shed fire, preventing it from causing further damage.
While they were battling the blaze, the crew spotted smoke rising from the roof of a nearby house. It turned out that embers from the shed fire had landed on the roof, igniting materials and causing concern. Thankfully, firefighters were able to quickly put out that fire before it became a serious issue.
The resident responsible for the shed fire had attempted to take care of some burning trash earlier in the day. Unfortunately, what started as a small-trash burn rekindled, leading to the shed fire.
The Garden Oaks fire resulted in damage to multiple air conditioning units and the apartment building’s side, as well as surrounding brush. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from this blazing episode, which is a relief given how quickly situations can turn dangerous.
