Beaufort County Celebrates 50 Years of Nexus Care’s Service
Beaufort County is buzzing this week as the Nexus Care of Beaufort County, formerly known as the Beaufort County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Department, celebrated a remarkable 50th anniversary in style! The grand ceremony took place with lots of joy and heartfelt speeches from staff and past directors who have shaped the organization since its inception back in 1974.
A Legacy of Care Grows Stronger
The celebration was a delightful reminder of how far the organization has come. Attending the event were four directors who have made significant contributions throughout the decades—William “Skeet” Von Harten, who led in 1974; Douglas “Bud” Boyne, who served from 1974 until 2017; Steven Donaldson, who directed from 2018 to 2023; and the current director, Rebecca Whitt Burgess, who took the reins in 2023.
This gathering was not just an event, but an emotional reunion that celebrated both the rich history of the organization and the plentiful lives it has touched through its programs and services. Over the years, Nexus has designed several initiatives aimed at helping individuals, families, and the broader community overcome the challenges of substance use. For many, these services are not merely beneficial; they are often life-changing.
Looking to the Future
With a sparkling enthusiasm, Rebecca Whitt Burgess expressed her excitement about the milestone. “We are so thrilled to celebrate 50 years of service to Beaufort County and its citizens. I am grateful that we could mark this momentous occasion with all the former directors of this department.” She emphasized that while it’s important to honor the past, the focus must now shift towards a promising future. “We will honor all who have served in the department and those who have been served by looking to the future and continuing a legacy of care that leads to healthy people, thriving communities, and brighter futures,” she added.
