Beaufort has been abuzz following last week’s city council meeting, where some important issues regarding local news and city interactions were brought to light. City Manager Scott Marshall took a moment during his report to address an emerging local news organization, the Beaufort Insider. This moment didn’t just shed light on the organization but also opened up a discussion about the integrity of journalism in the area.
During the meeting on October 8, Marshall didn’t start his address as he usually does. Instead, he jumped right into the heart of the matter, explaining why he had instructed city staff to limit their interactions with the Beaufort Insider. His reasoning stemmed from what he described as repeated attacks on his character by local developer Graham Trask.
Marshall expressed his strong feelings about Trask, alleging he has used “half-truths and misinformation” to smear his name. In a passionate statement, he shared a personal moment where Trask admitted to him that engaging with others on social media is “a game,” which deeply affected Marshall, who believes his profession is much more than just a pastime. “It’s my integrity. It’s my reputation. It’s my livelihood,” he stated, urging the council and audience to understand his commitment to serving the community.
Pointing to specific instances where he felt Trask undermined his position, Marshall elaborated that Trask had tried to create discord between him and the council. He cited comments questioning his leadership abilities, particularly around sensitive topics like financial assistance related to drainage issues in the The Point neighborhood. He also addressed allegations surrounding police department investigations, blaming Trask’s innuendos for misguiding the public’s perception.
In an interview following the council meeting, Trask responded defensively, arguing that Marshall’s reaction further validated his beliefs about the city manager’s lack of emotional intelligence. “Clearly I’ve gotten under his skin,” Trask quipped, standing firm on his criticisms of city leadership.
The Beaufort Insider is a relatively new online publication that sprang up in summer 2024, led by editor Carrie Chappell. With a mission to provide “fact-based news”, the Insider has made waves for its focus on local politics and controversies. Chappell has also been active in local political campaigns, raising eyebrows about potential conflicts of interest.
Despite rumors swirling online linking Trask to the Insider, both Trask and Chappell firmly deny these claims, stating their relationship remains strictly advisory. Chappell expressed her commitment to producing content that is factual, noting that she clearly distinguishes between news and opinion pieces.
Even as the Insider aimed to host a political forum, the event faced hurdles due to potential conflicts involving Chappell’s ties to some candidates. When several candidates pulled out of the forum, citing concerns around the atmosphere the Insider instills, the forum was ultimately canceled, much to Chappell’s disappointment.
Community sentiments are varied, with some recognizing the need for transparency while others worry about the direction in which local politics is heading. Mayor Phil Cromer emphasized that even if he disagrees with the Insider’s approach, the city should still uphold its commitment to public information. “We are a public body, and it’s public information,” he argued.
Marshall’s decision to instruct staff not to engage with the Beaufort Insider has sparked a larger conversation about press freedoms in Beaufort. While the law requires the city to fulfill Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, it does not obligate them to engage in dialogue with every media outlet. Although city council members have differing opinions on the subject, many agree that open communication and transparency are critical to maintaining a healthy municipality.
The developments in Beaufort present an excellent opportunity for residents to reflect on the state of local journalism and its role in democracy. With the upcoming elections looming, the actions taken in the wake of this controversy will undoubtedly influence the political landscape of the city.
