Beaufort Gears Up for 200th Anniversary Celebration of Lafayette’s Historic Visit in March 2025

Beaufort Prepares for a Spectacular Celebration of History

Beaufort is buzzing with excitement as the city gears up for the grand return of the Marquis de Lafayette, a key figure in American history. March 2025 marks the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s visit to this charming town, and the Historic Beaufort Foundation, along with the City of Beaufort and various partners, are pulling out all the stops for a celebration fit for a hero!

A Whole Month of Festivities

Planning for this momentous occasion began last August, and it’s safe to say that the lineup is nothing short of spectacular. Events will range from lectures to entertainment for children, including contests and parades. You can also look forward to informative display boards at City Hall and the John Mark Verdier House Museum that will give insights into Lafayette’s importance to Beaufort and the nation.

One of the highlights will certainly be the reenactment on March 18, where everyone will get a taste of Lafayette’s grand arrival and procession through downtown Beaufort. Jane and John from your neighborhood could be spotted in period costumes as townsfolk watched in awe. To top it all off, a magnificent Colonial Ball will be held at the scenic Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, echoing the celebration that took place when Lafayette first visited in 1825.

Why This Celebration Matters

Mayor Phil Cromer expressed his enthusiasm for honoring this piece of history, saying, “The 200-year anniversary of Lafayette’s visit to Beaufort reminds us of how long Beaufort and the Lowcountry have been an important feature in the history of the United States.” He noted how it’s exciting to see all the various activities planned to shine a light on how Lafayette helped unite the country.

This isn’t just a local affair; a coalition of around 50 groups at the local, state, regional, and national levels is working together to make March 2025 a month to remember. Schools across Beaufort County are being encouraged to join in, with hopes to spark greater interest and awareness about our rich history among students. “This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see history come alive in the form of Lafayette’s ‘return’ to historic Beaufort,” said Cynthia Jenkins, Executive Director of the Historic Beaufort Foundation.

Learning from the Best

Among the exciting plans is a visit from Lafayette interpreter Mark Schneider, a former U.S. Army veteran who has been thrilling audiences with his portrayals for over 25 years. His deep understanding of Lafayette’s life and contributions makes him a standout feature of the event. Charles Schwam, Executive Director of the American Friends of Lafayette, couldn’t agree more, stating, “Mark is the biggest deal we have.”

Lafayette’s Historical Spree

Lafayette was more than just a visitor; he was a French nobleman and a military officer who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. He fought alongside General George Washington and played a pivotal role in the decisive siege of Yorktown, which secured American Independence.

During his Farewell Tour of the Nation, Lafayette stopped in Beaufort, where he was welcomed with a 13-gun salute and a grand procession with carriages. The visit culminated in a lively reception that carried on into the early hours.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

Preparations for this colorful celebration started nearly two years ago, with numerous organizations coming together in unity to create something special. The Historic Beaufort Foundation is reaching out for community support, inviting individuals and organizations to volunteer and contribute to this historic occasion.

With events spanning several days, the excitement in Beaufort is palpable! Partners like the Beaufort History Museum, local schools, and community organizations are all rallying together to ensure this anniversary isn’t just remembered, but cherished and celebrated.

Join the Fun!

As plans progress and excitement builds, residents and visitors alike are invited to join in this celebration of history. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, be sure to mark your calendars for March 2025 as Beaufort pulls out the stops for Lafayette.
