In the charming city of Beaufort, South Carolina, excitement filled the air as the community gathered to celebrate one of its own, Elizabeth “Liz” Aiken Santagati. On October 22, 2024, during the 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner for the South Carolina Association for Community Economic Development Corporations (SCACED), Liz received the highly esteemed Order of the Palmetto Award, the highest honor that can be presented to a civilian in the state. The honor was bestowed upon her by none other than Governor Henry McMaster, highlighting the significant impact she has made within the community.
Liz Santagati’s journey has not only been commendable, but inspiring. Born into the beautiful Gullah culture right here in Beaufort, Liz’s story began at a young age. By the time she was 18, she had enlisted in the US Army, quickly proving her mettle in a demanding environment. At just 19, she became the youngest Ward Master in military history at her hospital in Tacoma, Washington, showcasing her exceptional leadership and dedication.
As the years rolled on, her commitment to her community never waned. Back in the late ’80s, she played a vital role in drafting the Lady’s Island Land Use Plan, ensuring that the Gullah community had a voice and representation in the process. Liz didn’t stop there; in 1990, she turned her focus to St. Helena Island where she continued her work in community preservation and representation, demonstrating her unwavering love for her roots.
In 1988, Liz joined the Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, where she launched the first supported employment program for individuals with disabilities. Her efforts contributed greatly to establishing crucial state standards and improving services for those in need. Liz’s dedication didn’t end there; she pursued further education at the Penn School for Preservation in 1993 to hone her skills further, showing her commitment to continuous improvement.
Partnering with like-minded individuals, Liz helped establish the South Carolina Coastal Development Corporation. It was here that she recognized the need for representation and support for Black-owned businesses. In 1999, she organized a meeting that sparked the creation of the first Black Chamber of Commerce in Beaufort, ensuring that black entrepreneurs had opportunities to thrive.
The positive effects of Liz’s work in the community have not gone unnoticed. Her pioneering efforts have been recognized as a model for systematic change, earning her accolades from institutions like the Asset-Based Community Development Institute and the Blandin Foundation. Additionally, she has previously received a Lifetime Achievement Award from SCACED, illustrating her extensive contributions to both local and state community development.
Santagati’s accomplishments have also reached beyond her local community. She was featured on Anthony Bourdain’s renowned travel show, “No Reservations,” showcasing the vibrancy of Beaufort and her commitment to the culture.
Currently, Liz continues her legacy of service as a South Carolina Silver-Haired Legislator and serves as Vice President of Beaufort Families and Community Leaders. Liz also dedicates her time to the American Legion Post 207, where she has served as Commander and is an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. Her influence stretches far and wide, and she has served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for Beaufort’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony for over 15 years, honoring those who served in a way that only Liz can.
As she joins ranks with other celebrated recipients of the Order of the Palmetto, like U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn and singer Peabo Bryson, Liz Santagati’s heartfelt dedication and immense contributions to her community remind us of the importance of service, leadership, and perseverance.
The entire community of Beaufort stands proud, celebrating Liz’s significant achievements. Her story is not just one of personal triumph; it’s a reminder to us all about the power of service and community. Here’s to Liz Santagati, a true beacon of hope and a shining example of what it means to give back.
