In an effort to preserve and restore one of its landmark structures, the City of Beaufort has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for roof repairs and restoration work on the historic Carnegie Library. The refurbished structure, a centrepiece of the Beaufort Historic District, is expected to boost local pride and improve the city’s cultural landscape.
The Carnegie Library, recognized as a contributing structure in the City of Beaufort’s National Historic Landmark District, is packed with architectural and historical significance. The scope of work of this project extends beyond a mere roof repair. It aims at comprehensive restoration, including repair of the existing terracotta roof, new dormer flashing, repair of the built-in-gutter liner, exterior wood repair, paint removal, painting, replacement of the addition roof on the east side of the building, and new underground drainage from the downspouts to the street.
The interior scope of work, however, is strictly limited to interior repairs associated with water damage from previous and current roof leaks which have damaged the historic plaster. The deadline to submit a bid for this significant restoration project is 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2024.
The value of the edifice goes beyond the aesthetic; it’s a part of the city’s rich history and an embodiment of its cultural heritage. Hence, the restoration of this structure is of irreplaceable cultural, material, and aesthetic value.
Simultaneously, the Beaufort County Board of Voter Registration and Elections is set to host a series of community forums aimed at educating and informing the public about the upcoming election season. The forums will cover a variety of subjects like voter registration, polling locations, deadlines and more. These community forums, scheduled to run from early April through to May, are open to all, free of charge, and serve as an invaluable tool for the local community to contribute their voice to the democratic process.
In parallel, Beaufort County Council Member – York Glover, seeks to engage with the public at the community meeting scheduled on April 4th at Beaufort County Library, St. Helena Branch. Among the topics expected to be discussed, updates on the Russ Point Boat Landing and efforts to expand broadband access within the St. Helena region will be conversed.
Both of these events form part of a larger commitment by local officials to remain transparent, open, and responsive to the community’s needs and queries.
The emphasis placed on restoration efforts, community education regarding voting, and community engagement highlight the City of Beaufort’s dedication to honouring its rich history, fostering a politically aware community, and ensuring continual growth in terms of community infrastructure and services.
This strong commitment to preserving the past while progressing into the future makes Beaufort not only a history-rich community, but also a citizen-focused city that caters to the varied needs of its residents.
