In a heart-wrenching case that caught the attention of both pet lovers and the legal community, a former Beaufort Marine has pleaded guilty to five counts of animal cruelty. The fallout from this sad story revolves around the negligent care of pets she was hired to watch over by a Hilton Head Island couple. The episodes of neglect led to the death of one dog from starvation and left another suffering from severe injury.
On a tense afternoon in court, 21-year-old Victoria Spencer faced the consequences of her actions. After a lengthy session, she was sentenced to 179 days in the Beaufort County Detention Center, followed by five years of probation. To further emphasize the gravity of her crimes, she was ordered to pay a substantial $7,716 in restitution to the victims, Jeff and Julie Tomlinson, the owners of the pets she was supposed to protect.
As Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen handed down the sentence, she reflected on Spencer’s youth and military background. “I understand you were young when this happened… but we love our pets, and they can’t take care of themselves — it’s our responsibility as humans to do that,” Mullen noted.
So how did things go so terribly wrong? The couple had discovered Spencer through an online pet-sitting service called Trusted Housesitters and had entrusted her with their two dogs and three cats for a nine-day period in September 2023. According to reports, Spencer was meant to check on the animals daily, ensuring they were fed, walked, and well cared for.
However, Ring camera footage indicated that Spencer’s visits ceased for a significant amount of time. While Spencer’s attorney claimed she was absent for only two days, investigators pointed out that the animals were left unattended for as long as five days. Upon her return to the home on September 14, 2023, Spencer was met with a gruesome sight. Both of the Australian shepherds’ kennels were “cluttered with feces,” and tragically, one of the dogs, Stryker, had passed away from dehydration.
The other dog, Roxie, was found in a distressing state—dehydrated and exhibiting visible signs of neglect, including injuries from trying to escape her cage. Meanwhile, the cats seemed to have survived physically uninjured but were found with empty food and water bowls.
What sent chills down the Tomlinsons’ spines was Spencer’s deceptive communication throughout the ordeal. She had sent them messages posing as if everything was fine while neglecting the pets. One message claimed she was busy with work but would later walk the dogs, while another expressed her anxieties about leaving them alone.
As Spencer stood in front of the court, she visibly trembled while apologizing to the couple. “If I would have known what was going to happen to the animals, I wouldn’t have ever done anything like that,” she pleaded. Spencer expressed a deep desire to correct her mistakes and “put [her] life on track.”
In the aftermath of the sentencing, the Tomlinsons expressed relief and satisfaction with the court’s decision, especially with the imposition of jail time. “If there’s ever a crime that seems appropriate to have this type of sentence, it seems like it would be this,” Jeff stated, alluding to the horrific conditions in which their beloved pets were left.
Additionally, the pet-sitting company has committed to enhancing its screening processes in light of this incident. “We take full responsibility,” they stated, reiterating their commitment to ensuring that such a situation does not occur again.
Today, Roxie is back home and healthy, although the tragic incident left her with a visible sense of loss, as she often wanders to her late brother Stryker’s favorite spots in the house. “She looks up at us, wondering where her brother is,” Jeff shared, highlighting the emotional toll on their family.
Animal lovers everywhere are likely to be moved by this story. As we reflect on the weight of responsibility we bear as pet owners and caregivers, let’s hope that incidents like this one serve as a clarion call to ensure that our furry friends receive the love and care that they so genuinely deserve.
