Beaufort and Jasper Counties Weather the Storm: Hurricane Helene’s Impact

This past weekend, Hurricane Helene made quite the entrance across the southeastern United States, but here in Beaufort and Jasper County, we can say we came out on the other side relatively unscathed. As of Monday afternoon, both counties reported zero storm-related deaths. That’s a relief! It’s incredible to hear that while other areas faced severe challenges, our community held strong.

Low Casualties, But Widespread Damage Elsewhere

While the coastal areas of South Carolina managed to stay safe, the same can’t be said for parts of the Midlands and Upstate regions. Sadly, at least 29 lives have been linked to Hurricane Helene across our state, a figure shared by Governor Henry McMaster during a media briefing. This pales in comparison to the tragic toll of the storm; across six states, it is estimated that the catastrophe has led to around 121 fatalities. It’s sobering to note that many deaths in South Carolina occurred due to falling trees, a stark reminder of the power of Mother Nature.

As we take stock of the situation, it’s worth mentioning that Helene’s impacts were felt more severely in places like Aiken County, Greenville County, and Spartanburg County. The casualty count not only surpassed the 19 fatalities from the catastrophic flooding in 2015 but came close to the 35 deaths recorded during Hurricane Hugo. It’s a chilling comparison and shows how we must remain vigilant in the face of these storms.

Power Outages and Storm Damage

On the local front, Helene left her mark, primarily in the form of downed trees and power outages. Many homes were without electricity for days, affecting around 50,000 residents in Beaufort County and 6,300 residents in Jasper County early on Friday morning. By Monday, those numbers had dwindled significantly, with around 2,300 households in Beaufort County still waiting for power restoration alongside similar concerns for 2,200 residents in Jasper County. It’s a comforting sign to see those outages declining as each hour ticks by.

In terms of damage, the area above the Broad River experienced the worst of it. Reports noted beached boats and flooding at the Beaufort waterfront, which is always a popular spot filled with locals and visitors alike. Additionally, we saw costly destruction at the boardwalk in Port Royal. To add to the excitement of the situation, the storm even generated three low-level tornadoes across Beaufort County within an 18-hour span, which is quite the weather phenomenon! It’s incredible how even lesser storms can unleash such fury, with gusts exceeding 70 mph contributing to the local chaos.

A Silver Lining: Hilton Head Island

One bright spot amid the tumult was Hilton Head Island, which mostly dodged widespread power outages. Thanks to the town’s electric lines being located underground, it seems they were better prepared to weather the storm. It’s wonderful to see some areas maintaining their usual tranquility even when the surrounding regions face challenges.

Looking Ahead

The response teams are out in full force, and though we have faced challenges, it’s essential to keep in mind that we are resilient as a community. Stay connected with your neighbors and watch out for those who might need a helping hand during this recovery phase. Let’s continue to uplift one another, especially in these trying times. Together, we can rebuild, recover, and come out even stronger. Remember to stay updated, and if you face any difficulties, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. We’re in this together!
