Beaufort Prepares for a Grand Celebration of the American Revolution

Exciting times are ahead for the charming city of Beaufort as the Beaufort History Museum gears up to host a series of spectacular events celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. Plans are underway for three major events that promise to engage history buffs of all ages and create a festive atmosphere right in the heart of downtown Beaufort!

Dancing Through History

The first major event will kick off on March 18, 2025, when the historic Beaufort Arsenal building will transform into a lively ballroom for a special celebratory dance. This event commemorates the return of the famous Marquis de Lafayette to the United States 50 years after the end of the Revolutionary War. Lafayette, a beloved figure of that time and the last surviving Major General of the war, will be honored through this vibrant evening of dancing.

Guests can expect a delightful evening from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, with Craven Street closed to traffic to make way for the festivities. A period dance instructor will be on hand to guide attendees through popular dances from the era, all set to melodious period music. Additionally, a reception in the courtyard will welcome guests as they enjoy refreshments ranging from sandwiches and desserts to beer, wine, and soft drinks.

With only 150 tickets available at $40 each, history enthusiasts are encouraged to grab their spots quickly, as these are sure to sell out! Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore a newly renovated room adjacent to the Museum, showcasing a special circulating exhibit dedicated to Lafayette.

Step Back in Time with a Reenactment

Following the dance, the excitement continues with a period reenactment scheduled for March 21-22, 2025! This engaging event is a collaboration between the Beaufort History Museum and Southern Campaign 1780 from Camden, South Carolina. The reenactment will feature skilled reenactors dressed in period clothing, serving as Revolutionary War facilitators to make history come alive!

On the first day, fourth-grade students will dive into a fantastic hands-on experience featuring an 18th-century medicine demonstration led by Dr. Tray Dunaway. Students will learn about the fascinating and sometimes quirky medical practices of that time. There will also be a thrilling cannon and ballistics program, where participants can get up close and personal with authentic cannons and muskets (assuming the weather cooperates).

The second day of the reenactment will open to the public, allowing everyone to witness history in action. This interactive program promises to be both educational and entertaining, making the past accessible for all ages.

An Immersive Theater Experience

As if that’s not enough, Beaufort residents can look forward to an immersive theater experience beginning in February 2026, which will explore the tensions between Patriots and Loyalists leading up to the war. This fascinating project is made possible through funding from a grant received by the South Carolina 250th Anniversary Commission. The production will be crafted by Monadnock Media Inc. from Hatfield, Massachusetts, ensuring a top-notch theatrical experience.

This immersive theater will not just be a one-time event but will serve as a permanent exhibit that will open to the public with a series of gala events tailored for families, adults, and children alike.

As the dates draw nearer, more details about these exciting events will be shared. Whether you’re a passionate history buff, a family looking for a fun day out, or someone who simply loves to dance, there will be something for everyone to enjoy during this grand celebration of our rich history. Mark your calendars and get ready to celebrate in Beaufort!
