If you’re in Beaufort this December, there’s a heartwarming event you won’t want to miss! For the 13th consecutive year, the First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort is hosting its beloved Annual Nativity Celebration, running from December 6 to 8. This delightful weekend will showcase over 150 different nativity scenes from all around the globe. It’s an event that promises to be not just a feast for the eyes, but also a chance to reflect on the true spirit of Christmas.
This year, the celebration is extra special, as two large and unique collections will be displayed alongside the community’s annual favorites. One standout collection belongs to 95-year-old Ann Errington, a resident of Lady’s Island who has been lovingly collecting nativity scenes since she was a child. Her collection features nearly 50 different nativity sets from various cultures, each with its own unique story to tell.
According to Donna Sheetz, the Volunteer Nativity Event Coordinator at First Presbyterian, Errington felt inspired by last year’s celebration to share her treasures with the community. She’s generously decided to “gift” the nativity scenes not only from her home but also from her attic, allowing everyone to enjoy the fruits of her long-held passion.
As the church prepares for this festive occasion, they are gearing up for over 700 adults and children eager to participate in this cherished community Advent tradition. Everyone is welcome, and it’s a great way to slow down during the busy holiday season. Sheetz emphasizes how families, friends, and even grandchildren can come together to experience the magic of nativity scenes, saying, “This weekend-long display is a great way to slow down, reflect, and learn about other cultures — all while anticipating the season of Christmas.”
The Nativity Celebration will take place at the historic First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort, located at 1201 North Street, Beaufort, SC 29902. The event is completely free to the public, making it accessible for everyone. Parking is easy, and the venue is handicap accessible, so everyone can safely walk through and enjoy the display.
You can visit the display on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Then, on Sunday, December 8, the display will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.. All ages are encouraged to come and appreciate this festive exhibition, whether you are seeking a moment of peace, some holiday cheer, or just curious about the diverse depictions of the nativity from around the world.
So, mark your calendars and gather your loved ones for an enriching experience that highlights the meaning of Christmas through beautifully curated nativity displays. It’s an event that promises to fill your heart with joy and maybe even inspire a new holiday tradition. Remember, the Nativity Celebration in Beaufort isn’t just about the art—it’s about coming together as a community and celebrating the spirit of the season!
