Aldi has received approval from the Design Review Committee to begin construction on a new grocery store in Hilton Head located at Sea Turtle Marketplace. While some design changes are required for pedestrian access and lighting, this 20,000-square-foot store aims to serve as a valuable addition to the community. With the location set just off the busy William Hilton Parkway, anticipation grows for the opening date, which is yet to be announced. The new site follows Aldi’s recent expansion efforts in the Lowcountry.
Aldi, the well-loved German grocery chain, has recently made significant progress in its quest to open a brand-new store in Hilton Head. The Design Review Committee approved the store’s proposed designs during a meeting on March 25, albeit with a few essential adjustments needed. The excitement for this new addition builds as residents await more details on this promising venture.
The planned Aldi grocery store will be located at 80 Matthews Drive, conveniently positioned just off the bustling William Hilton Parkway within the Sea Turtle Marketplace. This exciting new site will find its home in an otherwise vacant lot flanked by well-known neighbors, namely Homegoods and Northridge Cinema 10, and situated in close proximity to the Hilton Head Island Airport. This prime location is expected to attract a steady stream of customers.
As per the Town of Hilton Head’s spokesperson Heather Woolwine, final approval for the new Aldi store hinges on the completion of some design changes. Enhancements are needed for pedestrian access, lighting, and grocery cart storage to further enhance the store’s functionality and customer experience. The community is encouraged to keep an eye on developments as the store’s construction progresses.
The proposed Aldi store will be a freestanding structure sprawling over an impressive 20,000 square feet. Additionally, it will boast its own parking lot, ensuring customers will have accessible parking while shopping for their essentials. This marks a significant expansion for the Aldi brand in the region, increasing its footprint in the competitive grocery market.
Aldi’s journey towards establishing a store in Hilton Head started last year when construction and civil engineering firms laid the groundwork for the idea before local authorities. Fast-forward to February 2023, when The Providence Group signaled the signing of Aldi among its new tenants for the Sea Turtle Marketplace through their social media platform.
While there’s palpable excitement surrounding the Aldi opening, the construction date for the new location has yet to be disclosed. Groundbreaking is likely to occur once the necessary design alterations are implemented. Meanwhile, Aldi has recently opened another location along U.S. 278 in Bluffton in January 2023, serving as a reminder of the brand’s ongoing expansion in the Lowcountry.
The news doesn’t stop at Hilton Head; Aldi is set to expand its presence yet again with an approved location in the Beaufort Station. This shopping center will be situated at a vital intersection, Robert Smalls Parkway and Parris Island Gateway, with construction anticipated to commence this fall and a projected opening for late 2025. This development is part of a major retail expansion that is expected to inject nearly $60 million into the local economy.
Founded in 1946 by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht, Aldi has created a niche as a leading grocery chain recognized for its “no-frills” approach to maintaining low prices. The company’s foresight and strategic placement of new stores reflect its commitment to serving communities and meeting customers’ needs. With this new location in Hilton Head and another in Beaufort on the horizon, residents in these areas can look forward to enhanced shopping experiences.
As community members eagerly await the next steps in Aldi’s development journey, the addition of these stores promises to mark a new chapter in local grocery shopping.
