Aldi Receives Approval to Build New Location in Hilton Head at Sea Turtle Marketplace

Hilton Head, SC – Aldi grocery store is moving forward with plans to establish a new location in Hilton Head, after receiving approval from the Town of Hilton Head’s Design Review Committee on March 25.

The new Aldi will be situated at 80 Matthews Drive, off William Hilton Parkway, within the Sea Turtle Marketplace.

  • Size and Location: The store will be a freestanding building of 20,000 square feet with its own parking lot.
  • Proximity: Aldi will be near Homegoods and Northridge Cinema 10, adjacent to the Hilton Head Island Airport.
  • Design Adjustments: Required changes include improving pedestrian access, enhancing lighting, and providing grocery cart storage.

Town spokesperson Heather Woolwine confirmed that the final approval will come after these design tweaks are implemented.

This proposal originated last year when construction and civil engineering firms introduced the project. The Providence Group, managing the leasing for Sea Turtle Marketplace, announced the signing of Aldi Grocery and Fidelity Investments on their Facebook page in February of the previous year.

There is currently no set construction date, but Aldi is ready to break ground once the final design changes have been made. The grocery chain is expanding in the region, with a new store that opened in January 2023 in Bluffton and another location approved in February 2024 in Beaufort Station.

Aldi, headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, is recognized for its “no-frills” discount grocery approach, having been founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946. The company was split into two separate entities in 1961.
