Beaufort County Walk for Water Raises Record Funds for Clean Water
In Beaufort County, an inspiring event occurred this September, where hundreds of residents came together for the eighth annual Beaufort County Walk for Water. This heartwarming event took place on two Saturdays, September 14 at Live Oaks Park in Port Royal and September 21 at Wright Family Park in Bluffton. Despite the weather challenges, participants showed up in their walking shoes and, in some cases, even rain jackets, demonstrating their commitment to a cause that means so much to our community!
A Symbolic Journey
As participants gathered at the meeting points, they were greeted with excitement and a sense of purpose. Each person carried a bucket as they walked approximately three miles. This simple action was a powerful reminder of the daily struggles faced by millions of women and children in developing countries who must walk long distances to collect water—often from sources that are contaminated.
The event raised an impressive $87,000 this year, setting a record for the Walk for Water. The funds will go towards Water Mission, a Charleston-based Christian engineering organization dedicated to making clean, safe water accessible for those in desperate need. Over the past seven years, the Beaufort County Walk for Water has raised a combined total of over $500,000, providing clean water for life to more than 10,000 people.
A Deep Commitment
Debbie Slazyk, a dedicated participant from Beaufort, shared her reasons for taking part. “I’ve participated in the Walk for Water several times because it makes a difference in people’s lives. This is a small charity that makes a big, life-changing impact in the communities it serves,” she explained, her sincerity highlighting the importance of the event.
Lynn Newsom from Bluffton echoed similar sentiments—“Water is essential for human life. It’s our responsibility as Christians to help others have clean, accessible water. If we love one another, we must take care of each other. I’m thankful to Water Mission for their wonderful work in helping people worldwide live better lives,” she said passionately.
Recognition for a Job Well Done
This year, Water Mission honored the Beaufort County Walk for Water for its success, recognizing the substantial impact the event has made even before participants took their first steps. Robert Lasher, the chair of the walk, expressed heartfelt gratitude: “This is a huge milestone accomplishment for everyone who’s been associated with the Beaufort County Walk for Water, including our walkers, volunteers, and sponsors.”
