Public Feedback Sought on Proposed Changes to Beaufort's Woods Memorial Bridge Traffic Flow

Changes Ahead for Beaufort’s Woods Memorial Bridge

In the charming city of Beaufort, South Carolina, an important conversation is unfolding regarding the Woods Memorial Bridge, a swing bridge that connects downtown Beaufort to Lady’s Island. The Coast Guard is seeking public feedback on a proposed change that would have the bridge remain open to vehicle traffic for longer periods during busy morning and afternoon hours. As we sift through public sentiments, it’s clear that this issue has both sides—drivers and boaters—passionately expressing their thoughts.

Drivers on Board

For thousands of drivers, this change is nothing but welcome news. Every day, approximately 14,000 vehicles traverse this bridge, which crosses the picturesque Beaufort River. Unfortunately, the bridge suffers from frequent malfunctions, leading to unexpected delays. Many motorists are in favor of the proposed plan, which would minimize interruptions during peak commute times from 6 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. and 3:31 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. During these hours, the bridge would only open for emergencies, aiming to smoothen traffic flow and eliminate the congestion that drivers often face.

Laura Hamm, who works nearby, shared her excitement about the potential changes, noting, “When the temporary restrictions went into place in March, I noticed better flow in traffic getting to and from work. The plan would save me time and make my commute more predictable.”

Concerns from Boaters

But not everyone is in agreement. Boaters using the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway are raising their voices against the proposed plan. For those navigating the waters on sailboats or smaller vessels, the restrictions are seen as a significant obstacle. Geri Connors expressed her frustration in feedback, highlighting the need for balance, “Give residents here a break. Specify limited times boaters can come through. Not every hour!”

On the flip side, Cass Roby expressed concerns that this change could deter sailboat traffic altogether, saying, “Sailboats will be skipping this area. It’s a serious mistake if this plan goes through.” The Marina Trawler Owners Association suggests that the proposed schedule could significantly impact the safety and efficiency of boating traffic, fearing it might lead to an increase in vessels operating during darker hours due to longer wait times.

The Balancing Act

The Coast Guard’s proposal intends to strike a balance between the needs of motorists and those of boaters, acknowledging the significant amount of both land and water traffic. In 2022, the bridge was opened for marine traffic 1,669 times, primarily during the busy fall and spring seasons when travelers frequent the East Coast. While the adjustments might help ease vehicular traffic, they could complicate access for boaters looking to enjoy the vibrant Beaufort waterfront.

A Longstanding Issue

This predicament isn’t a new one—it stems from frustrations tied to the bridge’s lengthy history. Opened in 1959 and listed on the National Historic Register in 2003, the Woods Memorial Bridge has become an integral part of Beaufort’s landscape. Proposals for a new bridge configuration have floated around since as early as 1994, with calls for a fixed span to eliminate the closure issue entirely. Yet, here we are today, still weighing how best to serve the dual but conflicting demands of land and water traffic.

Your Voice Matters

The Coast Guard is currently accepting public comments until December 9. If you have thoughts on this matter—whether supportive or opposing—the time to make your voice heard is now. The balance between preserving the vibrant local boating culture and keeping traffic flowing smoothly is essential for Beaufort’s future.
