Birdwatching Adventures Await in Hilton Head This November

Hilton Head Island is set to become a birdwatcher’s paradise this November, bringing together enthusiasts of all levels for a series of exciting birding events. With nature lovers ready to share their passion, the upcoming month promises ample opportunities to appreciate the beauty of our feathered friends. The Hilton Head Audubon community is gearing up with four fantastic trips, guided by experienced birders and naturalists who are eager to impart their knowledge.

Feeling Chirpy?

Have you ever felt that love for birds right in your backyard? That’s the magic of living in the Lowcountry. For Patty Kappmeyer, a local photographer, the charm of Hilton Head’s shorebirds spark started over 30 years ago. “I am happiest taking photos, wandering through the marshes and forests, plodding through pluff mud,” Patty shares. Her work has graced magazine covers and websites, and she captures stunning images accompanied by fascinating tales of the birds she observes during her walks.

On November 2, you can join Patty at the Hilton Head Island library where she will present her experiences in photographing and understanding Lowcountry birds. Whether you’re new to birdwatching or a seasoned expert, you won’t want to miss her incredible stories and insights.

Tune In to Bird Songs

If you’re intrigued by the sounds of the wild, you’ll definitely want to catch Jim Asmuth’s session titled Birding by Ear on November 5. Jim’s love affair with bird songs started one foggy day in Connecticut when he stumbled upon a Hermit Thrush doing a solo duet with itself. Now residing in Bluffton, he has dedicated himself to helping others recognize and appreciate the enchanting vocal talents of our avian companions. This engaging presentation will be followed by a field trip at Jarvis Creek Park on November 9, where you may just hear the lovely tunes of local birds.

Unearth Historical Treasures

History and birding will intertwine on November 9 with the “Birds and Battlefield” tour in Ridgeland, SC. Here, you’ll learn about endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers whose colonies have been discovered on historical grounds. Renowned historian Rich Thomas will captivate the crowd with tales from the Battle of Honey Hill while Lynn Hodson, a biologist and Master Naturalist, leads the quest to hear the woodpeckers’ distinct calls. Exploring the intersection of history and nature makes for an unforgettable experience.

Listen to the Bird Lady

Mark your calendars for November 23 and head to Sterling Hill Park in Richmond Hill, Georgia, to hear from the esteemed birding expert Diana Churchill. For almost two decades, the “Bird Lady” has been bringing joy to nature lovers through her writing, photography, and engaging talks. At Sterling Hill Park, Diana will guide you through the beautiful parks, which have been transformed from a sewage treatment area to a haven for birds. During this gentle three-mile walk, you can expect to see an array of migrating sparrows and warblers, and even get a glimpse of a snipe.
