Beaufort County Reports Unprecedented Early Voting Turnout

Beaufort County Sees Record Early Voting Turnout

Beaufort County, SC – Excitement is in the air as the early voting period gets underway! Election leaders in Beaufort County are buzzing with anticipation, hoping to see a turnout that mirrors the impressive voter participation seen in Georgia. On a chilly Monday morning, voters began lining up outside one of the early voting locations, eager to cast their ballots. It was so busy that a reporter walking the length of the line took almost a full minute to make it from front to back!

What’s Happening on the Ground

Marie Smalls, the Director of the Board of Voter Registration and Elections in Beaufort County, expressed her enthusiasm for the turnout. She pointed to a remarkable trend, noting that even on the first day of early voting, they experienced record numbers. “At 7:30 this morning, voters were already waiting in line to cast a ballot,” Smalls said. Some had even beaten her to the office, arriving an hour before polls opened with folding chairs and water bottles in hand.

“People are planning,” she added, obviously impressed. “Some folks came prepared, and I think that’s a good sign.” Those who took the time to show up early did not appear phased by the wait; early voter Judy Mathews commented, “It was a lot of folks, it really was, but we held up our two legs and we made it.”

Astonishing Numbers

As of Monday, Beaufort County recorded a staggering 4,735 early votes, which accounts for more than 3% of the registered voters in the area. This enthusiasm is reminiscent of the historic 2008 election when around 76% of South Carolina’s registered voters made their voices heard, marking one of the highest participation rates since 1998.

The excitement isn’t just confined to Beaufort County, either. South Carolina leaders are optimistic that they will see a significant turnout across the state, hoping to build on Georgia’s rising trends in voter participation. The ongoing efforts to drive voter engagement and the apparent passion from citizens indicates that this election cycle may be one for the history books.
