Port Royal and Bluffton Begin Recovery from Tropical Storm Helene
PORT ROYAL — The residents of this beautiful coastal area are getting back to normal after the disruptions caused by Tropical Storm Helene, which made landfall on September 27, 2024. While many areas in South Carolina faced severe damage, Beaufort County managed to escape the brunt of the storm, and as a result, it has not been included in the federal assistance declaration from President Biden.
As the storm blew through, it claimed the lives of 29 people across the state, but thankfully, Beaufort County reported no fatalities or injuries. Residents are grateful for the relatively minor impact and have demonstrated remarkable resilience in the wake of the storm’s aftermath.
Weather and Clean-Up Efforts
The skies have cleared, with comfortable temperatures reaching a high of 84°F today and a gentle breeze from the west-northwest at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight, we can expect cooler temperatures dipping to around 67°F. For many, the pleasant weather has been a blessing, allowing cleanup efforts to transition from chaos to recovery.
After facing challenges like downed trees and power outages, the county and local municipalities got to work. A significant portion of the Henry Robinson Boardwalk along Sands Beach experienced significant damage, with some of its decking ending up in the tidal marsh. The storm took its toll on various structures, including a dock by the May River that now leans precariously into the water.
Down in Bluffton, things were no different, with May River Road temporarily closed due to downed tree limbs and utility wires, making travel hazardous for residents. However, the community’s resolve showed through as residents banded together to assist one another during this trying time.
Power Restoration and Water Concerns
Power restoration has been a key concern, and while over 675,000 customers state-wide lost power, Beaufort County initially had 34,000 customers in the dark. Efforts have made good progress, with Dominion Energy reporting that number has shrunk to about 3,000 as of today. They estimate that by 11 PM tonight, 95% of customers will have their power restored.
This process has not been as swift in Daufuskie Island, where crews have faced logistical challenges in transporting equipment via barge to fix downed lines and grounded poles. Currently, over 400 customers on the island are still without power, which complicates water access since residents rely on electric pumps for their wells.
To assist those in need, the Daufuskie Island Fire District has set up a drinking water station for residents without access to potable water.
Navigating Tornado Warnings
Interestingly, Tropical Storm Helene didn’t just bring wind and rain but also spawned tornadoes. The National Weather Service issued a staggering 63 tornado warnings across the region, with three confirmed in Beaufort County. Thankfully, these tornadoes have been categorized as EF0, meaning they packed winds of 65 to 85 mph.
Despite the storm wreaking havoc, residents have already begun focusing on repairing the damage and moving forward. With the Beaufort County School District announcing a return to in-person classes, students are ready to reunite with friends and teachers.
