Historic Savannah Receives $1.5 Million Donation for Preservation Efforts

This charitable foundation was established to honor the memories of two beloved Savannah residents who were immensely devoted to preserving the city’s rich history.

“We are deeply grateful to Murray Perlman and Wayne Spear for their incredible generosity and for their heartfelt commitment to historic preservation in Savannah,” said Sue Adler, the CEO and President of HSF. In recognition of this generous gift, HSF has plans to install the names of Perlman and Spear at their headquarters, as well as display a photo of the couple so that all who visit can learn about their inspirational story. Adler added, “Their legacy will live on through their support of Historic Savannah Foundation.”
Supporting Historic Properties
The funds from this donation will specifically support the maintenance and sustainable operations of several HSF properties, including the main headquarters located at 321 E. York St., the Davenport House Museum on Columbia Square, and the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy. Additionally, the gift will aid ongoing endeavors at the Murray C. Perlman and Wayne C. Spear Preservation Center situated at 323 E. Broughton St. The main board room at the HSF headquarters was officially named in the honor of Perlman and Spear on September 25, marking a significant milestone in celebrating their impactful contributions.

Wayne and Murray were described as “extraordinary Southern gentlemen” who had a passionate love for Savannah. Carol Day, a board member of their charitable foundation, noted their dedication, stating, “They remembered the ‘bad times’ when Savannah was being boarded up and buildings were being torn down.” Their commitment to restoring and enhancing Savannah reflects a deep appreciation for the city’s evolution over the years.
Before their passing, Perlman and Spear were already significant contributors to HSF. They were instrumental in funding the Murray C. Perlman and Wayne C. Spear Preservation Center, which was unveiled to the public in April of 2022. Their journey together began in the mid-60s and spanned over five decades, enriched with travel and shared experiences in both Savannah and New York City.
