Exciting Events Coming to Beaufort: Book Bans and Musical Treats!

Beaufort, SC – Get ready for an engaging afternoon filled with thought-provoking discussions and delightful music, as our lovely town plays host to two significant events this month! Whether you’re passionate about literature and education or just want to enjoy some live tunes, there’s something here for everyone.

Banned Together: The Fight Against Censorship

First up, Families Against Book Bans is excited to present a special pre-screening of the documentary Banned Together: The Fight Against Censorship on Sunday, September 22 at 3 p.m. This event will take place at the welcoming St. John’s Lutheran Church on Lady’s Island. It’s a wonderful opportunity to dive into a topic that’s been stirring quite a conversation recently: censorship in our schools.

This compelling documentary follows the journey of three local high school seniors who made waves with their efforts to restore access to a total of 97 books that were challenged in the Beaufort County School District. The saga began last October when complaints were lodged by two Beaufort County residents regarding the appropriateness of the content in these books. As you can imagine, it sparked some significant debates within the community.

The film crew had a front-row seat, capturing the highs and lows of these remarkable students as they lobbied to get the books back on the shelves. They didn’t just stop at school board meetings, either! They took their message to national politicians and made a memorable appearance at the Right To Read Rally during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago. Talk about making a difference!

After the screening, attendees will have the chance to engage in a lively question-and-answer session with members of the film. So, if you’re curious about what it takes to stand up against censorship and champion literary rights, mark your calendars and don’t miss out on this free event! If you’re interested in attending, simply grab your ticket and get all the details at the event’s website.

Savor the Sounds with Sterling at Penn Center

But that’s not all happening in Beaufort this month. Musical fans will also want to head over to the historic Penn Center where the talented Gary Sterling will be treating audiences to a mesmerizing free concert. With a rich background as an international entertainer hailing from our very own town, Sterling promises to deliver a memorable performance that locals will surely enjoy.

As part of the vibrant arts scene, this concert not only showcases exceptional talent but also aims to foster community spirit. So, if you’re looking for a relaxing evening filled with great tunes, make sure you stop by! It’s a perfect way to unwind while supporting local artistry and culture.

More Local Happenings

In addition to these events, don’t forget the 8th Annual Lowcountry Book Club event organized by the Pat Conroy Literary Center, and the USCB Chamber Music ensemble, which is kicking off its 45th season! With the Beaufort Theatre Company also set to bring delightful performances of classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, there’s certainly no shortage of entertainment in our beautiful town this September.
