Get Ready for the 35th Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep in Bluffton!

Community Clean-Up Day

Get Ready, Bluffton! It’s Beach Sweep/River Sweep Time!

Bluffton, S.C. is buzzing with excitement as the town gears up for the 35th Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep. This amazing event will take place on Saturday, September 21, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM along the beautiful May River. Whether you are a local, a visitor, or somewhere in between, everyone is encouraged to join in the fun and help keep our waterways and marshes clean!

What’s Happening?

The Beach Sweep/River Sweep is South Carolina’s largest one-day volunteer clean-up event, and it’s designed to tackle litter in our beaches, marshes, and waterways. It will kick off at Oyster Factory Park, located at 63 Wharf St., where volunteers can gather to make a real difference. Not only will you be doing your part for the environment, but you’ll also get to connect with friends and neighbors who care just as much about our natural resources as you do!

Who Can Join?

Anyone and everyone is welcome! Families, friends, schools, youth groups, and even businesses are invited to take part. If you’re a kayaker or boater, we’d love for you to bring your watercraft along, too. It’s an excellent opportunity for the whole community to come together and show their love for our planet.

Nicole Wright, the Town’s Stormwater Technician, says it best: “The Town is very grateful for such an involved community whose residents share their concern and care for the May River.”

A Day Full of Fun and Purpose!

Before diving into the clean-up, volunteers will be treated to a complimentary cup of May River Blend coffee or hot chocolate, thanks to Corner Perk. The Town of Bluffton will provide snacks and water to fuel your efforts throughout the day!

Don’t worry about gathering supplies—we’ve got that covered! All volunteers will have access to gloves, bags, sunscreen, and plenty of water, so all you need to bring are your comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes.

Help Us Gather Important Data!

The clean-up is not just about picking up trash; it’s also about learning. Volunteers will act as citizen scientists, collecting data on the types and amounts of litter they gather. This information will be invaluable as it will contribute to South Carolina’s statewide data and the Ocean Conservancy’s global efforts. By documenting what they find, volunteers will help identify the sources of litter and assist in crafting recommendations for preventing future pollution.

Get Involved!

It’s a fabulous way to engage with your community and play a part in preserving the incredible beauty of Beaufort County’s waterways, rich in marine life. Not only will you feel a sense of accomplishment, but you’ll be part of something much larger than yourself.

Some fantastic partners are helping to make this event happen, such as i2 Recycle, Waste Management, and Keep Beaufort County Beautiful, to name a few. They are ensuring that recyclables are managed properly and that the trash we collect is disposed of responsibly.

How to Join?

While registration is not necessary, it would be great if you could let us know if you’re bringing a group. This way, organizers can plan ahead for supplies and projects. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Nicole Wright at the Town’s Watershed Management Division by calling (843) 706-4569.

So, grab your friends and family, put on those comfy clothes, and mark your calendars for this fantastic community event. Together, let’s show Bluffton some love and keep our beautiful waterways pristine for all to enjoy!
