Hilton Head Highlights Future Growth

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Hilton Head Christian Academy has taken an exciting step towards its future by breaking ground on a new building that will cost an estimated $8 million. The ceremony, held on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone for the academy, which has experienced rapid growth since relocating to Bluffton three years ago.

Meeting Community Needs

Academy leaders have recognized the need for expansion as the local community has seen a rise in population. Doug Langhals, the Head of School, commented on this important decision. “Demographic wise, the majority of our student body was coming from off island, and so we decided to move out here where the student body was,” Langhals noted. Since the move, the school’s enrollment has increased by an impressive 65%, indicating a strong demand for the educational services they offer.

Growing Enrollment Challenges

However, rapid growth brings its own challenges. The school is currently facing capacity issues in its existing facilities. Langhals explained, “We’re in the midst of growth and we’re at a moment where we have filled up the building that we have. This high school building has always been a part of the master plan, but we’re in need of it just for space for students.”

New Building Features

The new structure will cover approximately 16,500 square feet and will include essential spaces such as classrooms, laboratory rooms, and break rooms. Rick Parrish, the Director of Operations from Choate Construction, highlighted that the design will align with the existing buildings on campus, creating a seamless look throughout the school.

Current seventh graders attended the groundbreaking ceremony, and they will be the first class to experience the new high school building once it is completed. Excitement is in the air, and students are looking forward to the extra space and improved learning environments. Connor White, a senior at Hilton Head Christian Academy, expressed his enthusiasm for the future, stating, “This new building that we had about three years ago has revolutionized the way that I’ve been able to learn whether that be in an open common space or in a classroom like usual.”

Anticipation for Future Students

White also took part in a special activity during the ceremony, signing a beam that will be used in the construction of the new building. As he prepares to graduate and move on to college, he shared his hopes for future students. “As our school grows and our world grows, I think these kids are going to grow up and they’re going to have all these new experiences,” he said.

Funding Progress

So far, Hilton Head Christian Academy has raised over 75% of the funds needed for the new building. The goal is to have the new facility ready for students by the fall of 2025. This positive momentum reflects the commitment from the school community and supporters to enhance educational opportunities in the Lowcountry region.

Conclusion

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building at Hilton Head Christian Academy signifies more than just a construction project; it represents the academy’s dedication to meeting the educational needs of a growing community. As the school continues to adapt and expand, it looks forward to providing students with the best possible learning experiences in the years to come.
