Hilton Head Island Mourns the Loss of Jane Binns
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is somber as the news of Jane Brandon Binns’ passing spreads throughout the community. At 80 years old, Jane was a beloved resident of Hilton Head Island for 43 years, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.
A Life of Service and Dedication
Jane Brandon Binns was born on February 17, 1940, in Amherst, Ohio, to the late Dr. Marion B. Brandon and Marjorie Hageman Brandon. Her commitment to healthcare was evident throughout her 55-year career. After graduating from Amherst High School, Jane pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Rochester’s School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1963.
She began her career at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, where she served as Head Nurse for an Obstetrics/Gynecology Unit. In 1978, she started making her mark at Hilton Head Hospital, taking on roles such as Nursing Supervisor and Director of Hospital Planning and Special Projects/Risk Management.
Community Involvement and Artistry
Beyond her contributions to the healthcare field, Jane was deeply engaged in the Hilton Head community. She held leadership roles in organizations such as the Palmetto Chapter of the American Red Cross and Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. In 2000, she took on the role of Executive Director at Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.
Aside from her professional endeavors, Jane had a passion for the arts. She was a talented painter, honing her skills at the University of Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery. Her creativity also shone in the kitchen, where she delighted loved ones with dishes inspired by her extensive collection of over 1000 cookbooks.
Remembering Jane
Jane Binns is survived by her husband, Gerald (Jerry) R. Binns; her daughter, Megan A. Elliott (Scott); her sons, Robert T. Binns II (Teresa) and Brandon Scott Binns; five grandchildren, Ian, Alex, Kristin, Rachael, and Kaelyn; great-grandson, Torren; her brother and sister-in-law, Edward A. Brandon (Neva); sister-in-law Elizabeth Jane McNierney; and numerous other relatives.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Jane will be held in Hilton Head Island at a later date due to the ongoing pandemic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to charities such as Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, American Red Cross of Lowcountry South Carolina, or the “University of Rochester School of Nursing.”
