BCSD breaks ground on renovation of Hilton Head Island High School

Hilton Head Island High School, a key institution in Beaufort County, has begun a journey towards significant transformation. A groundbreaking ceremony held on Wednesday, May 8 marked the beginning of one of the most extensive renovation projects ever undertaken by the Beaufort County School District.

Milestone Project for Community Development

Funded through the school district’s 2023 bond referendum, this ambitious project is expected to be completed over a span of 4.5 years, creating a new landmark in the district’s history of infrastructure augmentation. The groundbreaking ceremony was graced by the presence of several key figures, including Board of Education Chair Christina Gwozdz, Superintendent Frank Rodriguez, Hilton Head Island High School Principal Steve Schidrich, and students.

In his address, Rodriguez highlighted the significance of this project for the local community and emphasized how the school’s makeover would cater to the academic needs of future generations. Echoing his sentiments, Gwozdz showcased her enthusiasm about the new era for Hilton Head Island High School, an era filled with potential and boundless opportunities.

Inception and Planning of this Grand Project

The groundwork for this colossal project was laid during the school district’s 2019 bond referendum, whereby it was determined that the referendum’s funding would be allocated towards the planning and design of this project. In 2022, a feasibility study was conducted which concluded in favor of executing the renovations while maintaining regular functioning of the school.

Little Diversified Architecture was commissioned in 2023 to spearhead the architectural aspects of the project. Lead architect Don Baus, along with his team, worked tirelessly in tandem with community members and the School Improvement Council (SIC) to sketch the project’s blueprint. Adhering to an inclusive approach, the district also invited public opinion on the new designs to ensure wide-scale acceptance and appreciation.

A New Chapter for Hilton Head Island High School

Originally built in 1983, Hilton Head Island High School will now undergo a metamorphosis that will change its architectural landscape. The renovation will add two stories to the existing single-story structure, amplifying the capacity and potential of the institution.

The renovation will be completed in two phases — the first one adding more classrooms, science laboratories, a media center, administrative offices, and special education classrooms among others. The second phase will herald the construction of a new cafeteria opening into a spacious courtyard, making for an ergonomic and aesthetic space.

The Road Ahead

The district’s Citizen-Led Oversight Committee, comprising a group of vigilant volunteers, will supervise the execution of this project, ensuring transparency and efficacy in operations.
